Forum Suggestions

Post by mle_ii »

A couple of Forum suggestions:
A forum for Journals (which could include medical history)
A forum for Medical Research and/or Articles (perhaps this could also include discussion for those who do or don't like to read medical/scientific discussions.

Are there any other profile options? Like birthday, reading order for threads (I usually like them in reverse order, newest at top), avatars.

I don't see anything wrong with a Journals forum, maybe in place of a Members Medical Profile room.

I agree, we will definitely have a room or rooms for information on important medical research.

There's a birthday room, the threads are listed in order with the newest at the top, and you can use avatars if you want.

On the birthday room, that's interesting, but "most" forum software has the ability for folks to put birthdays into thier profile and when their birthday comes up it will say it on the bottom of the forum. Not something we need, but I kind of like it. But then most folks here are used to the birthday room.

Are there other Profile options available that you haven't turned on yet? You can PM me if you don't want them pubically known. Some have been a whole lot more useful than others.

The only options that I can recall that are not enabled are e-mail, and HTML.

I may add some things when I get time , but there are a lot of other things that need to be done first. A lot is happening every day.

I think that folks get a lot more out of the Birthday Room if it receives the personal attention of a real live person, rather than a machine. Peg does a great job of it.

Food intolerance chart - idea

Post by Tara »

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the group but have been watching for a few months. I was diagnosed with Collengeous Colitis in the fall and just in past weeks decided to try to figure out my intolerences because since reading this forum I assume "that" is the cause.... I have experienced symptoms for well over 10 years, but just finally dealt with it and had a scope to confirm it in the fall.

I see that everyone lists their intolerances in their profile. I was thinking I would like to chart these. I'm pretty sure Gluten is a huge percentage of members and dairy is up there too, but would love to chart out the actual stats. i.e of the 1400 members, how many have intolerances listed, of them how many are gluten, dairy etc intolerant.

I will volunteer to work with the data to present it in an easy to read manner (I'm excellent using EXCEL). I started to do this myself just reading through the various posts but thought if I can be given a dump of the member info (user name and list of intolerances only) I can begin the process of breaking the list of intolerances down per type to see if we can work out some stats.

If this already exists, please point me in the right direction. If someone is good with surveys or polls and can poll all members and have them check off the items they are intolerant to that would work also, but with the existing member profile info we are garenteed to get a lot of data. it will just take a while to manual extract it.

Thanks
Tara

Hi Tara,

Welcome to the group. Unfortunately, not only does "everyone" not list their intolerances in their profile, but actually, a rather low percentage do. And of the ones who do, many of them initially guess at them, and then fail to update them as they learn more about actual sensitivities. Consequently, while the information that displays from member profiles, is somewhat helpful for purposes of responding to posts, it's not very reliable, and not extensive enough to be of much value as reliable data. And polling the members will only get results from the handful of members who are currently posting at any point in time, because most members move on and stop posting, after they find out how to control their symptoms and begin to see success in their recovery.

A much better source of reliable information can be found in our list of actual member test results from EnteroLab, which can be found here. The main attributes of this list is that the data are accurate and reliable, rather than based on guesswork, and the data are cumulative, rather than a sampling from current posters.

Note that not all members order tests, so we only have information on those who do, who choose to share that data. Please remember that these test results are the property of the respective members, and the data are copyrighted, so the information cannot be used for commercial purposes, or purposes outside of this board without special permission.

That said, it might be handy to have some statistical information for comparisons, and I'm sure that a lot of members would be interested in seeing how their results sort out relative to the rest of the group. Note that many members also have DNA results listed for various genes that predispose to gluten sensitivity.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
