Skype is the way to go
Had a lovely (real) chat with Mars on Skype today. It would be great if more of us were to download it & purchase a microphone. You can talk for as long as you want, even have conference calls, at no cost, just your internet connection. You really need to have broadband to make it viable. I have used it with dialup but it is not as successful & you get broken up & a lot of echos.

Hi Liz,
I plan to get mine set up in a few days, but I'm not sure I'll be able to use it much, until Cingular makes some progress with adding wireless broadband service to more of their local towers. I can't get broadband cable at home or work, so I'll have to go the wireless route, with a laptop.
I think I might be coming down with a virus of some sort, the way I feel tonight, but if I'm feeling OK this weekend, I might drive out to a better reception area, and see if it works from Texas all the way to Australia. LOL.
I think you're right - Skype has a bright future. I'm glad to see that the button in your profile works, because I didn't have any way to test it, when I set it up.
If I remember right, there's an add-on that I can install with the board software, that will allow your button to also show when you're online. I can't remember if it lights up, or flashes, but anyway, it's supposed to indicate when a Skype member is "available, online, or whatever they call it, when your computer is receptive to Skype calls. Maybe I installed that and forgot about it, but I don't remember doing it. If a few people start adding their Skype username to their profiles, I'll see if I can find that add-on, and install it. I noticed it somewhere on the Skype site.
Love,
Tex

Hi Wayne. Look forward to hearing from you. In any case, the Skype program itself lets you know when one of your contacts is online, just like Messenger or ICQ. Has a list of your contacts & if one is online it turns green.
It was great being able to hears Margies voice over all that distance. Just like she was down the road.

Extremely COOL!!!
My husband is on the verge of wiping my computer clean and reloading everything. Perhaps after that my mike will work. I did buy headphones with a mike last November but for some reason, the mike isn't working. Bill says it's something to do with the sound card. It's supposed to be a good one.
You know, this computer is not quite 3 years old and everything was working fine until Bill started messing around. I know he screwed it up good but I must keep my tongue under control. It hasn't been real easy but I'm to the point now that I WANT him to wipe it out and start over. Don't tell me to do system restore. It just tells me that it can't be restored. I really hate it when he starts messing around with stuff. There are so many programs that won't work now. I'm just grateful I can still get on the "net".
OK, I hope he never reads this......I'm sorry I "blew".

Shirley,
Been there - done that.
I'm pretty sure that almost all guys are like that, especially when it comes to computers. We feel obligated to "fix" and "improve" things, even when they don't really need fixing or improving. Once we start tinkering, sooner or later, something will go wrong, and then we'll have to try to "fix" that, which will lead to some other issue, and so fourth and so on. Eventually, we get to the point where we wish we hadn't messed with it in the dirst place, but, of course, it's too late by then. LOL.
It's nothing to worry about - it just proves that Bill is normal.
