Ok this little tidbit from the link I sent about the bile system is interesting:
In this case until the ileal damage is repaired things that would help with recirculating bile would help (probiotics) or reducing cholesterol (fiber, probiotics, etc). In fact getting more sun would help reduce cholesterol I would think, I wonder if any studies here have been done. The reason I think this might happen is that when we get sun, cholesterol is turned into Vitamin D (though not directly as I recall).
There I go again, bile acid, probiotics, Vitamin D, fiber.
There's got to be a better way of removing stones than surgery. Doesn't ultrasound work, or some chemical that can break down the stones?
Mike
Given that those with colitis and indeed MC/LC/CC can have ileal damage this is a problem for us as well. With ileal disease or loss, bile salt malabsorption breaks the enterohepatic circulation, decreasing its hepatic return and thus decreasing secretion. Reduced bile flux through the liver produces lithogenic bile with excess cholesterol.

Ok, and take this artcile for what it's worth, but it does have a lot of good info in it (along with a few nutty things).

Christi,
There are several members here who have had their gallbladders removed, and hopefully they can share their experiences with you. One of my sisters had the surgery several years ago, and it solved her problems. I haven't heard her complain of any adverse after effects. She was just glad to be rid of it, and especially glad to be rid of all the pain.
Love,
Tex

Hi Everyone,
Just got back from the HIDA scan and it is emptying at 7% instead of the 30 something it is supposed to do. Sooooo..it's definitely my gallbladder causing my pain. I can't believe I have been having these attacks since I was 15 years old and went to so many GI and it was my freaking common run of the mill gallbladder problems. What a relief to finally know what it is. You all gave me the courage to push for answers.
Thanks for all the research and information. I am hoping to deal with the pain for a few more days and do my homework. I would love to hear all about the experiences of members who have gone through this. I was hoping to get the breast biopsy over with first but I don't think that will work out.
I am exhausted from no sleep this week. Thanks for all the love.

Cristi

Wow, I'm definitly going to have mine checked out as well. I don't have the pain you describe, but supposedly it can radiate to the back and right shoulder/arm, and I have had this pain before. I can also remember some other sharp pains on my right side, though I thought it was lower.
Best of luck to you. Great to hear your persistance paid off, let us know what you plan and how it goes.

Cristi,
I hope you can get a good night's sleep tonight. You certainly deserve it, after all you've been through, and after you had to take your doctor by the hand, and show him how to diagnose gallbladder disease. LOL.
Good work!

I'm glad you found the answer to the problem Cristi! It helps to KNOW what is wrong instead of feeling so frustrated.
What is the next step - removal of the gallbladder? The associated pain went away after my surgery.
The surgery is usually done microscopically with 3-5 small incisions on the right side of your stomach. You usually go home within 1-2 days.
Good luck!

I have a friend who had the laparoscopic surgery, (to remove her gallbladder), and if I recall correctly, she was anle to return home the same day. She was back at work the next week, with no ill effects.
On the other hand, my sister had the conventional surgery, and she was in the hospital for several days, while recovering.

Hi Friends,
10am and I just woke up from a wonderful night's sleep...no pain. I am meeting with a surgeon on Mon. and will probably have it removed sometime next week. I should be able to have it removed laproscopically since I have no stones.
The only reason they did more testing at the ER this time other than drawing blood is that I am so skinny now that they could actually see the gallbladder sticking out like a goose egg below my ribs. They are still a little baffled why I had no stones, fever or raised white blood count.
My Mom had hers out 10 years ago and didn't have any problems either....everyone I talk with is happy to be rid of it. There is a risk of D after the procedure...I know what a big deal that can be.... so that makes me anxious...but in the end this pain trumps it.
Am going to go eat something low fat so as not to tick it off again. Thanks for helping me get through this.
Will keep you all posted .

Hi Cristi!
Sure am glad to hear that they finally came up with a correct diagnosis and hopefully after next week you will be free of that awful pain.
And I know it's easier said than done when you're feeling anxious about maybe being one that gets the bile dumping D, but Questran is really good at maintaining and eliminating that.
I'll be thinking about you and here's to no more pain!!

Hooray!
Great news that they were able to pinpoint the problem finally. And three cheers for you for being so assertive about your health.
Keep us posted. Here's hoping you are finally on the road to recovery!

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the support. Still having discomfort, but not the intense pain. Thurs. evening I took two morphine pills and it didn't begin to help. I'm so thankful to know what is going on and that there is something that can be done.
Mike...I had a colonoscopy Jan 2006 where I was dx with LC. Then I went to the mayo clinic in Dec 2006 where their people looked at the original biopsy and said that while there were some lymphocytes there...there weren't enough to warrant an LC dx and that the biopsy they performed didn't show any. However my first GI maintains that it was LC. Since entocort never helped me ...I am inclined to think that I didn't have it or if I did it was extremely mild and not my major problem.
I am kind of grateful for the mistake because without that I wouldn't have found you guys or Dr. Fine and discovered all my food intolerances. I have been wondering that with so many symptoms that we have in common...that if inflammation was not a major player in my problems ...then perhaps a lot of the negative symptoms so many of you have can not all be attributed to just the inflammation. But then I think most of you have suspected that anyway.
I predict that I will have to get my gallbladder removed and also eat the way you all do to get healthy.
The healthy diet that I have been following this last 10 mos is part of the decision to go ahead and remove the gallbladder because if it is still acting up after eating such a clean diet then I will continue to have problems. And with getting older..it's only going to get worse.
I hope I can get it out soon. My decision is made...glad to have a weekend to think it through. Now I just want to get it over with.
Love,
Cristi
