Test for food tolerances

Post by hazel »

My friend is starting at a new doctor and she (the new doctor) is going to have her tested for food tolerances. She (the new doctor) says different foods are better for different people. I know enough people in this group have intolerances, so I suppose the reverse can be true--that some foods are Really Good for you. Has anyone heard of this?

Hi Hazel,
Interesting question. I would venture a guess that Polly and a few of our Paleo diet folks could answer that, so thought I'd push this up where they can see it. It apparently was somehow missed, being so close to the holidays.
Thanks!
Yours, Luce

Hi Hazel,

Yes, that makes sense that differant foods at differant times are better for us folks with food intolerances. For example, I was not able to jump into a diet to find relief at the onset but since my imflamation has healed (meds/diet) I'm able to eat whole fresh foods now such as greens, apples, oranges and such with no problems, these foods give me energy and just feel good when I eat them. This is also a food group I could not tolerate years ago when my symptoms were all over the place.

Feel good foods for me are high in antioxidents- I drink lots of green teas and eat alot of greens as well as whole fresh foods.

Love,
Joanna

Hi Kathy!

She might be referring to the book "Eat Right for your Food Type (or is it Blood Type?)", which assigns you to one of 4 menus of food based primarily on your blood type:A, B, AB, or O. Although the book has not received scientific acclaim (primarily because there is little to no research to back up the claims), I do believe there is some basis for the claims.

Since blood types are determined genetically, it makes sense that one has genes from ancestors who lived in certain parts of the world and ate certain foods. For example, I believe the book says that those with type A blood are best with wheat/grains. I do adhere to the genetic theory, since I have decided after much experimentation that I have the "hunter-gatherer genes" which determine what I can or cannot eat. My ancestral countries are England, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, and Germany - all countries where hunter-gatherers lived. (I have type O blood, BTW).

I'll bet that one day, we'll each be given a genetic analysis at birth that will tell us which foods are the best for us. Won't that save us a lots of illness/grief? I think it is these genetic differences that create the havoc in the nutritional world. You know, how the recommendations change from year to year? I think it's because studies are run on a group of people, all having different genetic patterns. Thus, the results are mixed and difficult to determine.

Joanna, just saw an article study showing that black tea is equal to green tea in nutritional benefits. I can provide the reference if you are interested.

Love,

Polly

Hi Polly,

I never gave that much thought, but what you said makes a heck of a lot of sense. I'm also a type O.

Love,
Tex

P S According to a poll that we did in June, 2005, about 48 % of the members here, (who knew their blood type), have type O positive blood.

This is strange but I have a personal problem with black teas because they still remind me of coffee, which I loved but never drank without milk or cream. Black teas just beg for a shot of cream, sugar or honey.

I'd like to read that link, thanks Polly.

Hi all,
My friend got her test results back and it turns out they told her her INtolerances! It was a blood test that wasn't covered by insurance ($100). Her blood was sent away to a lab, Alletess Medical Laboratory in Rockland, Ma. www.foodallergy.com The idea is that you reduce inflammation by not eating things you are intolerant of (haha we knew that!). Her dr. told her to not eat any of her intolerances for 2 weeks, then gradually add them back in. She is intolerant of lactose, gluten, peanuts, asparagus, grapes, a whole bunch of stuff that she eats all the time! She knew about the lactose.

Ok so if we ask our Drs to send blood tests to this place and pay out of pocket then we could get more confirmation about what your INtolerances are?

That is cool- I think I might do some research on it and try it out.

Let us know if your friend feels better after eliminating these things from her diet!!

I on the other hand have no idea what my blood type is but I know it is rarer than others.

If you check out my journal (link in my sig) you can see the results of my test, the lab I went through, and more info on what the test does and the science behind it.

mle-

I used enterolabs as well about 3/4 year ago.

It would be nice to have back-up to those tests as well- and if they could find more intollerances then I might try and eliminate those as well.

Don't remember, insurance paid for them. I'll look tonight to see if I can find the paperwork.

Hey Mike-

I just found a website on Custom Probiotics...

www.customprobiotics.com

Basically they have a blend of 6 cultures- L Acidophilus, L. Salivarius, L Plantarum, L Rhamnosus, B Lactis and B Bifidum...

260 billion CFUs per gram and a 100 gram bottle is $165- and if you take one adult size scoop a day .8 grams it will last for 4 months so that is about $40 a month (cheaper than VSL)... Likewise if you were to take 2 (0.8 gram scoops) it would last 2 months at 80 per month and you would get 520 billion vs 350 billion that VSl has... This looks rather interesting and at least the website has a lot of good information on probiotics etc.
