Hi All,
No, we didn't buy it, to answer your first question. I had planned to call her after she got off work today, to make sure that she was using a desktop PC, rather than a laptop, before I bought one without a monitor. Before I could call, though, she called me, instead.
It seems that their tenant, who leases their land for farming/grazing, made a very timely rental payment, so she and Mike decided to go ahead and buy a new computer, (a Compaq, complete with the new Vista operating system). Her tech serviceman should have all the software installed, and have it ready to be picked up, by the weekend.
She said to tell everyone hi, and that she appreciates our kind offers to help. She misses her "family", and will be glad to be back on line.

I bought a laptop last fall, and I wanted a small, lightweight one, but they were so durn expensive, that I wound up buying a 15" widescreen model, which, by the time I add all the accessories, requires a 17" bag, and weighs about half a ton, altogether. LOL.
Anyway, it was labeled "Vista ready", so if you find the new operating system to be the best thing since sliced bread, I may upgrade mine.
Since the laptop I bought is so big and heavy, I wound up buying a Cingular 8525, which is a phone-edition PDA, for daily use. It's only slightly bigger than most phones, and will do pretty much everything I need to do, in the way of notes, word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet access, etc. The only real drawback is that small screen, (2.8").
Since it fits in a shirt pocket, though, with plenty of room to spare, it's hard to beat for handiness. I find myself using it more and more with each passing day, because it's always right there in my pocket, any time I need to update a file, or make a quick note, schedule a meeting or an appointment, look for something on eBay, or check the radar, if a storm is approaching. I agree, smaller and lighter is better, as far as mobile computing is concerned.
I'd be very interested in hearing what you finally decide to buy, and how you like it, after using it for a while.

I am thrilled to hear Oma will be back in the fold soon. I did check at work but they sold the extra PC they had. It is so very nice to know that our family was so willing to help her out. There is no place like HOME!
