Hi Bob,
I seem to do better when I don't go long periods of time without eating. Someone I use to work with who's husband was a doctor told me that your stomach and intestines do accumulate air especially when empty (from swallowing saliva??).
Have you ever tried Larabars (brand name)? Whole Foods and other health food/organic groceries sell them. They're raw nuts and dried fruit stuck together with dates. Nothing else. I have multiple intolerances and these agree with me. They're just the right amount of sweet and protein to get me through the morning or as a mid-afternoon snack. They're convenient too. They're a travel staple for me.

Just got back from the MD, got a bottle of Asacol - I will be patient and see how it goes. I'll post something within a couple of weeks on the Asacol thread, and keep "Gas City" on it's own topic. Thanks for the info on your site folks, really helped me talk with the MD on his own terms.

Hey Bob, I was wondering if you still had issues with the gas?
I found something recently related to Flagyl and gas, specfically methane producing bacteria. What was also interesting is that this methane producing bacteria can cause constipation as well. Neomycin was helpful for folks with constipation form of IBS, this form of IBS is noted in folks who produce more methane than normal as methane is found to slow down the digestive tract.

Bob,
Since trying to go Paleo the nuts are destroying me. I can take them in a almond or cashew butter but as whole nuts it is 1) bloating 2) horrible gas 3) explosive dump. Nuts are not my friend either.
Love, Maggie

Wow, Flagyl. That's a blast from the past. During the first decade of trying to fix this colitis, some of the Dr's were of the "find a bug - take a drug" mentality. I did lots of O&P tests, took Flagyl, Yodoxin, etc. None of that helped, and made me feel VERY toxic.mle_ii wrote:Hey Bob, I was wondering if you still had issues with the gas? I have had essentially zero problems with gas since September 6, 2006, the morning after starting the Prednisone -> Entocort. I woke up that next morning with a formed stool, and have been walking upright on 2 legs ever since. Amazing change - and had nothing to do with diet.
I was avoiding all gluten, went through a phase of eliminating all grains, zero sugar, etc. and was having explosive gas & D that would not stop. Month after month.
The day after the meds, it all went away.
It was like siphoning water out of a fish tank, and all of a sudden someone clamps the hose tight, and the siphoning stopped. The rapid motility (transit time) was normalized. Zero gas problems, solid BM, just amazing. I never would have believed it.
I hear ya. I will never forget the day I ate a bunch of nuts, and then felt like a "bunker busting bomb" that failed to make it to the toilet in time. It was awful.Maggie wrote:Since trying to go Paleo the nuts are destroying me.
I can eat nuts now. I don't go out of my way to eat a lot of them, but have had occasions in the last 5 months where I ate about as many as the time I "exploded". No problems whatsoever.
The way my body was wired, it was just going to keep on exploding til somebody took the colitis and put it in a straight-jacket. I tried to avoid drugs till the 11th hour, now I sound like a salesman for the drug company...

Hi Bob,
Yes, you do sometimes sound like a drug salesman, these days. LOL. That's definitely a side effect of once again "walking upright on 2 legs", after 15 years of knuckle-walking. Hahahahaha.
I can guarantee you that those of us who found relief by altering our diet, (only), after years of living in hopeless misery, felt the same way - we fervently preached the virtues of the diet, to anyone and everyone who would listen, (and to a heck of a lot of folks who wouldn't listen). LOL.
Finding relief, long after you've given up, and finally admitted to yourself that it will never get any better, will do that to you. It's a fantastic feeling to get your life back, isn't it.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

And now, for my next act, I am a born-again Adrenal and Thyroid preacher. Thanks again to Marsha, for taking the time to do a post describing Hashimoto's. Hit a chord with me, I sent in the labs, and sure enough I had it. And a failed adrenal. Gotta know what's broke before you can fix it.
