Husband's Biopsies....

Post by Dee »

Hi All!
I never put my burdens out there and usually carry them all to myself, but this time, I'd appreciate some thoughts and prayers.
Monday, Jack had an appt. with his urologist to go over the results of his prostrate biopsies. The doctor took 12 of them. Well, 1 out of the 12 showed cancer.. So, now the hardest part is deciding what treatment to choose.. I have been researching the net and trying to get well informed so we both can make the right decision... So many questions at this point, and the urologist went thru the options so flippin fast after telling us the results that I can't even tell you what he said.. At this time, Jack is is the not wanting to talk about it stage.. Sooooo, once again, I have to be strong one on this end, no matter what I may be feeling inside..
Thank for being here and listening!!!

Love
Dee

Hi Dee,

Same here.

Do you happen to know the Gleason score? It's a number between one and ten, and low numbers indicate a slow growing, (IOW, not very aggressive), tumor. If it's a low number, you have plenty of time to make a decision, in fact you may be able to just "watch and wait". In many cases, the growth is so slow, that it can take decades before it requires intervention. And yes, there are many good options available.

I hope it's a slow-growing one.

Love,
Tex

Thank You So Much!!
Jack's, Gleason score is a 5 and it is stage T1C.. It all started with a PSA of 3.6 so the urologist wanted to do the ultrasound and biopsies as a precautionary procedure. 3 options were given, wait & watch, radiation therapy seeds or removal of the prostrate.. I know Jack won't be comfortable with the wait and watch and my concern with the radiation seeds are the possibilities of it affecting his bladder or his colon. And with that procedure, if it rids the cancer that is there now, that doesn't mean that it can't reaccur, just in another area. It is stated that after the radiation therapy if cancer would develop again it would harder to treat.
My honest opinion is, if there is something in there that shouldn't be remove the prostrate. I'm hoping if that is the decision that whoever does it can do the one that spares the nerves..
I'm sure I'll be back to release some more, and I'm sure glad that I've been able to get some of this out with all that I know really care.

Dee,

Those are good numbers. They mean that time is on his side.

If you haven't seen this article from Johns Hopkins, you might find it interesting.

Here is why I think the wait and watch strategy has more merit than meets the eye:

If you choose surgery, you may be interested in this site:

It's a tough decision. With the numbers you listed, though, there's really no need to rush to do something. Remember the old carpenters adage, "measure twice, cut once".

I wish you both the best of luck, and the wisdom to make the best decision,
Tex

Thanks Wayne for providing those websites to me..
I can add more info from them to my questions list that I will be taking with us to the urologist next month.. I'm sure with most patients, that they don't go into these appointments well armed, but I have always been the type to do my homework with anything medical where we are concerned... Some doctors will sit up and take notice and others don't want to listen to what the patients have knowledge of...
I may be a blonde, but don't stereotype me!!!! :bandevil:
