Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Okay, this time I really did locate the malicious code, and removed it. Unless someone replaces it, we shouldn't have any more problems with unwanted pop-up ads, (until someone dreams up another new way to do it).

I'm conversing with the php support group, to try to figure out how it was done, and how it can be prevented in future versions of the board.

I apologize for all the aggravation, and for taking so long to find it, but this appears to be a new method of hacking, and it was a bit tricky to locate. If it weren't for some help from a kind soul at the php support group, I'd probably still be looking.

Love,
Tex

Hi Tex,

I loved the title of your post. They always seem to find a way. I got it this a.m. immediately upon hitting the internet at work and not in any way connected with the board. I think it is striking a lot of places since my friend say her work computer had it too.

Thanks you are the GREATEST. Love, Maggie

Good job, Tex. It had downloaded itself on my computer. Had to remove and restart. Best I can do tonight. Love, Carol

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for the kind words. To be honest, I'm just glad that none of you threatened to whip my butt, because it took me so long to find it. I'm sure you were all getting plenty tired of the aggravation - I know that I sure was.

The reason the board was down so long today, is because after I found the problem, and fixed it, I phoned my ISP, and told them what I found, and suggested they might want to check their server, to make sure that the other discussion boards on it were okay, and nothing else was amiss, so they took it ofline, and checked it out. After they put it back online, the owner called me and told me that that server had been "attacked"one day last week, and flooded with malicious BS. That's probably when our board files were hacked.

I think that someone is upset with me for removing their code. When I got home from work, a little while ago, I had about 20 times the normal volume of spam emails waiting for me. All of them addressed to my website email address, (rather than my personal email address). LOL. That's okay, I can filter that stuff straight into the trash can.

Anyway, thanks for not threatening to kick my butt. LOL.

Love,
Tex aka Galahad

P S Carol, sorry to hear about that problem. I hope you got all of it out of there. I noticed a time or two, when I spent a few seconds trying to trace the source, that it would automatically begin to download something, so I had to abort and close the connection to stop it. It was a very irritating thing, to say the least. That was one time when a slow connection was an advantage. If I had a broadband connection, they probably would have succeeded in downloading it before I could respond intime to stop it.

HA HA Tex, the spammers must be bored. I've had a huge number of them in the last couple of days at work and at home.

Tex,
Don't you EVER worry about it taking too long to find/fix a problem or even if you can't for some reason. I am just so darn grateful to have you running this board and being willing (and able) to do so, that I doubt I'd ever hold you presonally responsible for anything that went wrong with it.
