Have you had this eye problem with CC or LC???

Hi everyone. Six months into my LC, I suddenly developed "floaters" in my right eye. The medical term is Posterior Vitreous Detachment, or PVD. In my case, the floaters look like little black strands, almost like a flimsy false eyelash. that come and go. My opthamologist said it's usually a sign of aging (sigh!) when the collagen behind the eye lessens. There's no treatment; one simply learns to live with them.

I recently read that these floaters are sometimes associated with Ucerative Colitis or Crohn's! Unfortunately I can't find the article. Anyway, it has me wondering if anyone here with CC or LC also has this problem? I never have had eye problems until this.

No, I don't have the problem (yet). Quite a number of years ago, my Mom developed them and they really drove her crazy until she got used to them. She has diverticulitis but as far as I know, no other bowel disease.

Count me in on the floater vote. Have had them for quite a while. Also have had those episodes where you see flashing, strobe-like lights for 10 min. or so. This is supposed to be normal, too - I think it is from the vitreous fluid pulling away from the retina a bit.

No fun getting older.

I JUST RECENTLY started getting eye problems - mostly just an overwatering of both eyes, mostly my right, but I think it's because I lay on that side, so it all comes out. Anyway, it FEELS like I have chunks floating around in it, and I can see them in the mirror, but it hasn't gotten to the point where they're over my eyeball yet, so it's not inhibiting my vision. I haven't been to anyone about this..

Hi Carrie,

A few years before my MC symptoms presented, I developed drusen, which is apparently an autoimmune disease. Despite all the talk about early detection being helpful, etc., there is nothing that can be done about it, as far as I know. It causes loss of vision acuity under low light conditions. When the light starts to fade, I have to use glasses, in order to read fine print.

Now that I think about it...I have had floaters since I was about 27 when I first noticed IBS symtoms or what I thought was IBS symtoms. I also had warning when I was about to get a migraine that started with a floater and developed into a sparkling ring that got bigger and bigger and when it popped my headache was there full force. So I had to take meds before the ring popped. It may be part of this illiness. Love Oma

I don't have floaters....but I do have a thing where I feel like I have something in my eyes, like an eyelash, when I :blinking: . I get it in both eyes and sometimes it hurts. There is nothing in my eyes that I can see.
I don't know what causes it, or what it is.

Very irritating though.

I get floaters here as well at the ripe old age of 36. I've had them for quite some time now. At times I can also see what looks like blood moving through the veins, in or on (?), my eyes. Strange!

Yup, I've had floaters for probably 20 years at least (I'm 48) and lately they've been getting WORSE, to the point where I can't read something on a sheet of paper until they move the heck out of the way! And ONCE I had a squiggley circle that had a flashing outer edge for about 20 minutes.... supposedly an "aura" of a migraine. It really is fascinating all the strange things that happen to our bodies - too bad we can't just read about it somewhere, rather than have to live it ourselves, huh?

Thanks, Peg, for the links. Wouldn't it be great if someday they discover why there's an association between floaters and Crohn's/UC? Then maybe someone will find a connection with CC and LC. Perhaps collagen is the common thread...who knows...

Hi All,

I get floaters when I eat something that I shouldn't. Yesterday I drank V8 juice that I've had before. Of course, I didn't read the label this time and they've added citric acid (corn). This afternoon, I had such bright spots in my vision that I couldn't read or see TV.

I've had those "auras" from painless migrains also. Some really strange stuff. Never know what they are going to be either. I've had several different kind. Also the "aromas/smells" but not at the same time as the auras. Have you ever had those?

Hi everyone,

I just want to say... that my mother had gallbladder surgery and not too long after that was diagnosed with iritis and TB in her eye. She had blue eyes and migraines also.

She was Scottish and Irish. Most of her GI issues had to do with not having a gallbladder.

I have brown eyes, have LC, used to have spastic colon, and now am having these issues with my eyes. I also have migraines. I wonder about a connection. It is interesting to me that everything seems to start with the colon.

Hi Shirley: I only had the "aura" once, but my doc said that was a classic migraine thing. My sister gets them often, never any pain, just 20 minutes worth of watching that thing in her eye. She has also mentioned possibly a "smell" a couple of times, but can't be sure if it's migraine-related. Interesting, but STRANGE.
