What Vitamins, Minerals or Supplements for GI Health?
What Vitamins, Minerals or Supplements are most important for GI Health? And how are they helpful? And perhaps why are they helpful? Perhaps we can create a FAQ for this. Perhaps adding references would be good as well so that folks can read on their own too.
Here are some that I've read about here and other places. Any to add, change, update?
Vitamins
B12 - Helps GI deal with Sulfites so it can help those who's bodies react badly to sulfites. Not sure of the mechanism.
Minerals
Magnesium - I forget why this is helpful. Anyone? Keeps you regular?
Supplements
Glutamine - It is an amino acid used by most organs in the body, in particular the GI uses this as well.
Pepermint - Helps calm/relax GI tract. Anti-Inflamitory?
Fiber - Can help folks stay/get regular both with Diarrhea and Constipation. Though some folks don't do with with fiber. Causes stool to bulk up and absorbs water.
Thanks,
Mike

OOO I will have more to update to this info later. (I'm at work now, my book is at home.. )
The Allergy Self-Help Cookbook I have actually has a whole section for vitamins/nutrition, and how each vitamin supplement affects the GI tract AND the autoimmune response, and how much of each vitamin you need :) This is GREAT info, because in order to COMBAT this disease, along with diet for some of us, you also need to stock up on vitamins! Otherwise your body has NO energy to go on!!! (you're too busy pooing it all out!)
So! I will add to this later!!!

Hi Mike,
You asked for comments.
Even though I have a kind of extreme approach to supplements (I don't take anything) I approve of your idea to create the FAQ.
My reason(s) for not taking any supplements, as some of you already know, is that I find most supplements have some kind of ingredient that wreaks havoc on my sensitive gut. For the time being I am choosing to rely on natural sources such as food, sun, and exercising in order to make sure my body gets what it needs.
Unfortunately, I don't think I can contribute much to the FAQ on this subject but like I said earlier I welcome your initiative and I would love to see you working on it and presenting your ideas/drafts to us. You could invite others to participate - I know Marsha is very interested in this subject and Polly suggested a few others.
I am looking forward to see what you create. Thanks, Mike.
Love,
Karen

Mike,
I just read a study that showed that magnesium reduces the risk of colon cancer. This Swedish study was done in women (for a change) and looked at magnesium intake in FOOD rather than supplements (for a change).
I think it's a great idea to pull all of the info we have on vitamins/minerals together - it would make a nice article in the diet info forum eventually. Why don't you write it?

Mike,
I hope you're camping in the woods - lots of "bathrooms" behind the trees. (giggle) No rush on the article - I think it's great that you'll work on it! Thanks. Best wishes for a QUIET GI weekend!

I added Acidolphlus to my diet and green tea instead of peppermint....as the peppermint relaxes the the herniated muscle too much (hiatle hernia)..I take the B-complex...Glocosimine and type ll coligen....billberry...ginseng....and green tea extract...plus my Norpace for heart and one asacol a day. Love Oma
The green tea helps your tummy? I know of it's other health benefits, but I didn't know about how it helps the GI.Herb_Lady wrote:I added Acidolphlus to my diet and green tea instead of peppermint....as the peppermint relaxes the the herniated muscle too much (hiatle hernia)..I take the B-complex...Glocosimine and type ll coligen....billberry...ginseng....and green tea extract...plus my Norpace for heart and one asacol a day. Know this will sound ludicrous but...
Wouldn't it be wonderful if all these minerals and supplements could be comprised into one pill or maybe three before meals? I have glutamine, acidophilus, gf vitamins etc... and some are taken on empty stomach.
Just a thought from someone outside medical profession but definitely learning.javascript:emoticon(':nurse:')javascript:emoticon(':graduate:')

Ok, now what are the odds, when I was reading more about seratonin I started thinking about another supplement that I was taking, an amino acid called L-Theanine. Supposedly Theanine can help you relax and it helps with regulation of seratonin. Well, guess what I found while reading more about this...mle_ii wrote:The green tea helps your tummy? Ltheanine, found in green tea, has been shown to stimulate the body’s production of alpha wave activity in the brain. Alpha waves are involved in reducing anxiety while increasing mental alertness and acuity.
Re: Know this will sound ludicrous but...
Yeah, that would be great. :) Though I wonder if some react differently to one of those things than others. Specfically I came accross an article talking about food alergies and it mentioned that glutamine can be a problem in some people.mjbonsais wrote:Wouldn't it be wonderful if all these minerals and supplements could be comprised into one pill or maybe three before meals? Boy, glutamine may react with other food intolerences then too? I have heard it is very good if you are indeed gluten intolerant. Guess that's the trouble with finding a wonder pill huh? lol :goodvibes
