Today was the first time I made mention of this big change for us on the board so you didn't miss anything Mars, I've been kind of keeping it under wraps, for some reason I guess. Think I'm just trying to come to terms with it although we are all very content and know it's the right change for us to make at this time.
Alans already there, buying a home as we speak. Alanna and I are staying put here until school is out in June, then we will leave.
We have been looking at property for about a year in the Fergus Falls area and were hoping to find a hobby farm of some sort in decent shape but the pickings are slim- also the farm houses that were in good shape were much too small for us so the home we are bidding on now is newer, built in 99, over 3000 square feet so lot's of space for all of us in our new situation, overlooks a lake and sit's on 5 acres of woods. It's perfect. It does'nt have a wrap around porch like the old farm houses but does have a covered front porch and large back deck area.
My husband and I were both born and raised in MN, both our parents still reside there as well as brothers, sisters, and their children. We travel back to see them 1-2 times a year at least and as our parents are aging we would like to be closer to them. Alans Father had a stroke years back and is for the most part in good health but limited with walking, speech and such and MIL cannot care for him any longer so we plan to move him into our home. He is in his early 80's and a wonderful man.
There is so much going on in my head right now with this move- it's crazy. I really miss Alan, he did alot more around here than I realized. So I'm tending to the household, working more than usual at the flower shop, being Mother and Father to a 13 year old girl, taking care of bills for the first time in 15 years and thankful I have the next few months to pack up a household we have lived in for 15 years. Good thing I don't mind splitting kindling or taking care of 2 dogs and 2 cats.
Thanks for asking...I'm overwhelmed but am okay. Doing fine in the MC department- stress hasn't affected it in the least. Diet is doing the job!

Joanna

Hi Joanna,
Well, how about that? I knew you were thinking about a move. How long have you been in Alaska now? And how does Lannie feel about it ? (that's a hard age to leave your friends but maybe a little easier than in the middle of high school). I'd guess there are some similarities between AK and MN.
What exactly is a hobby farm? The property sounds lovely - hope you get it.
Be sure to take good care of yourself - you have a lot on your plate right now. Moving is one of life's biggest stresses, IMHO. At least it's a good chance to weed things out.
Love,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Joanna,
The property sounds absolutely wonderful even though you couldn't find exactly what you were looking for. Location alone must make up for a lot. 5 acres, overlooking a lake & a nice large house..........sounds heavenly, but I know you are sad to be leaving Alaska. I believe you have really enjoyed living there. At least you aren't going to a totally alien place.
Katy,
I was kind of stunned when you said 2.5 years. Just doesn't seem possible that it's been that long since your move.
Love, Shirley

HI Joanna,
It is great that you have found a place you like, are positive about the move and also having Alan's father reside with you. It is also a plus that you have the time ahead to do real packing and time to sort things out.
I am going to lose my only contact to the Last Great Place on Earth but wish you luck in your move. MN and AK have dogsledding in common.
Love, Maggie

Joanna,
Lucky you moving to Mn.! It is a beautiful state and yes, I'm slightly prejudiced ! I was born and raised there also, lived there for 26 years.
I still miss it, especially some of the values that come as a result of living in a place where the climate is harsh. Where did you live? I lived in St. Paul, and S. St. Paul. Graduated from the U.
Your farm sounds lovely - I can just picture it. I've been to Fergus Falls, but don't remember it or why I was there.
Love,
Alice

Hi all,
Thanks much for the good wishes, I have so much on my plate for the next few months and your support is so appreciated. Your such dear friends.
Polly, I moved to Alaska when Alan and I married 15 years ago- my how time flies. It's been a incredible experience to live here, just awesome. Alanna is totally okay with this move and looking forward to being closer to Grandparents and cousins. In a few years this move would have been much harder- I think she will do fine.
Maggie, not to worrry about losing a link to Alaska & the Iditarod, we are not cutting all ties for now. We plan to sell our home but are keeping a remote lake property and plan to build some kind of retirement cabin- for the future...per my husband. One of us will have to get a pilots license though....hum, I don't know what he's thinking!
Tex, your description of a hobby farm is right on. I wish we had been able to find a suitable one with outbuildings and a home that was big enough but it's not mean't to be now. Hopefully, in the future.
Alice, I grew up at 1664 Taylor Ave in St. Paul, right near the state fairgrounds. Over the years, I've also lived in Waconia and Brainerd. Agree, Mn is a great state, much like Alaska but without the mountains, extreme non stop daylight or darkness, and very high cost of living among other things. I wish I had gotten out into the bush communities here more often .....that's a regret I have. Many are living very subsitance lifestyles, still. It's amazing.
Gotta go bring in some wood before bed, it's snowing and we could get 6 inches by morning.
Love,
Joanna

Good news, the bidding war is over and we were able to come to agreeable terms on a MN house. Closing date is in a week.
This is such a relief, now Alan can move his Father out of the Veterans home into our new home rather into temporary housing.
This are looking up!
Love,
Joanna

Wonderful! It's always a relief to know where you are going to live. Now you can start dreaming about decorating to suit your taste and all the FUN stuff that goes with moving. Of course I'm still dreaming about my decor choices. Fortunately the previous decorators of our house weren't far from my favorite colors, so we don't clash too bad with our surroundings. Just needs freshening up a bit, and pealing paint and wallpaper drive me batty!
Stay warm.
