Atkins Diet Trounces The Competition, In Latest Study

Post by tex »

And naturally, the guy who developed and promoted the diet that ended up yielding the poorest results, has a few "sour grapes" to add:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Tex,

This is something we here have suspected/known for a long time, isn't it? It now appears that refined carbs (bread, sweets, grains, etc.) are far greater causes of heart disease (because of the risk factors of obesity, high blood pressure, and increased cholesterol) than the fats. And Adkins doesn't even "push" the healthy fats. My lipid profile, BP, and weight are better than they ever have been since I found that I did best on the paleo diet, so I can attest to the value of the "fatty" diets vs. the carb ones.

Isn't it fortunate that those of us who cannot tolerate gluten or refined sugar are actually forced to be healthier??? That old silver lining again.

Love,

Polly

I see what you mean, Tex, and I had to laugh when I read this:

"Barry Sears, who developed the Zone diet, criticized the study as "bad science," saying details show the participants did not really follow the diet rules. The execution basically was fairly pathetic at best so the conclusions are jaded," he said in an interview. The way people followed the Atkins diet in the study, he said, is actually closer to the Zone's principles."

Since his Zone Diet yeilded the worst results, I wonder how he figures the Atkins people managed to lose the most weight by modifying it to "his" diet.

Hi Polly,

I totally agree with you. After monitoring what I was eating for a week, with my PDA "PersonalDiet" program, it was obvious what was causing my weight problem. It was the fact that I was no longer intolerant to corn. LOL. Those dang tortilla chips are loaded with carbs.

I have absolutely no doubt that the closer to paleo we eat, the better off we are, healthwise.

For people who don't have Tex's program, I totally recommend going to Sparkpeople.com and using the feature that lets you enter your food for the day (or a week, or more): it gives you a day's total "breakdown" of every nutrient you've eaten. Vit C, fats, carbs, salt, selenium, folic acid - - any obscure thing you want to measure.

What I found was that the only things I get enough of are fats and salt, pretty much. It was very eye opening.

I am not surprised that Atkins Diet seemed to beat out the others. But I think diets are like everything else.. not all diets work for all people. When Atkins first came out, my husband and I went on it. He got sick... I lost weight..
