Enzymes for anti inflammatory effect, Wobenzyme

Post by Reggie »

On another board where I lurk, people claim that taking "Wobenzyme" or similar enzyme formulations help as much as advil or aspirin with inflammation. They have lots of bromelain and papain in them. Since NSAIDs bring on D, I'm always looking for a substitute.

Has anyone tried enzymes for pain relief from minor joint aches? Anything that does work?

I used bromelain for inflamation.

For pain relief I found that kava kava seemed to work some. Supposedly even peppermint can help with some types of pain.

I've heard glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate help to alleviate joint pain.
I don't know if you take any prescribed medications or not, but if you do, always check with your doctor before adding something like kava. Just because it says it is natural doesn't mean it is safe to take with prescribed meds. There can be some serious interactions... Even with the 2, I mentioned above, check with your doc...

Yeah, kava is a little scary, even for me with my dozens of supplements.

I do take glucosamine and it does make a difference. The pain the I have trouble with is from trigger points in muscles. I have several in my pelvis. I was making progress with physical therapy until this last bout of D. The therapist is working at the ones near my coxxyx, and that requires access from my rectum. Which isn't possible during D flares, of course. Ah, who else can one talk to about this except potty people!

My pain is considerably worse since the D is ending (I hope). My best guess is that the firmer stuff coming out is irritating nerves and muscles around my rectum. I get definite pain after defecation, a brand new symptom. I've been using 4 vicodin a day, but this week I'm suddenly up to 8. Yes, this is serious pain, that's the max for vicodin. I'm still having breakthrough pain and will probably get back to the doc next week.

Every time I make progress with one of my diseases, another one takes exception and flares.

Thanks for your responses. I'll post about the LC flare in a few days when I'm sure it's under control. I'm on cholestyramine.

Reggie,

That sounds like it could be proctitis. Has your doctor considered that?

Yes, Tex, I've been down that road with a couple of urologists. My prostate (knock on wood) is fine. I haven't had any urinary symptoms at all since they removed a kidney stone that was trapped in ureter and referring pain to unspeakable places.

No, I wasn't referring to prostatitis, I meant proctitis:

Kava Kava is one of those supplements that I would be very careful with especially in conjunction with other meds or supplements.

Too many Pro#*%titis's for me! I'd never even heard of proctitis, Tex. That's another interesting condition I hope I don't have. I'd think the colonoscopy would have shown it, and my physical therapist is 'intimately' familiar with my rectum by now. She's definitely finding trigger points.

I went through a few bottles of that, and some other "super cure-all" enzme snake oil that had a lecture saying it would bring back the dead. It did nothing for my colitis, and I mean nothing.

Some people have medium symptoms, I had prize-winning "hey buddy, this is an inflammatory bowel disease" type "D". It took big guns to even get it's attention, then it backed down http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4794
