Wendy,
In your profile, there are selections you can enable, which will allow you to receive an email notification of a PM, and/or a pop-up notification, when you log onto the board, because it's easy to overlook the indicator in the messages link, at the top of the page. I think those options are normally selected by default, but you might have deselected them when you registered.
If you have any private messages, and you log off without reading them, the next time you log on, you will not see any indication that you have any messages in your "Inbox". They will will still be there, though, and you can click on the "You have no new messages" link any time, to see your PMs.
Also, when you send a PM to someone, it will remain in your "Outbox", until they open it. As long as it is still in your Outbox, you know that they have not read it, and you can edit it, or delete it, if you choose to do so. If it's no longer there, then they have received it.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
