Daisy the Poodle has MC! No kidding.

Post by Polly »

Morning!

Several days ago I was walking Rusty on the trail and we saw Daisy, a standard poodle that we often see there. I recalled that she had been quite sick a few months ago - some kind of severe GI upset that the vet thought was due to something she got into or a bad infection.

Anyway, Daisy's mom proceeded to tell me that the diagnosis is now MC! Daisy continued to have diarrhea and had a colonoscopy, which made the diagnosis. She is now on Entocort, which, of course, must be paid for out-of-pocket ($$$$). Anyway, she is doing much better - is now having only one or two still-soft BMs per day. The vet has Daisy on a lamb and rice hypoallergenic diet. Naturally, I mentioned that fact that some humans I know with MC cannot tolerate grains, even rice. I suggested that she try the raw food diet for Daisy (which contains no grains), once she has completed the month's trial of the diet recommended by the vet. In fact, the vet had even suggested that the raw food diet may be a next step if symptoms did not totally resolve. (It sounds as if the vets may be way ahead of the GI docs in treating MC, doesn't it?)

Daisy's mom was quite excited to bump into to someone who not only understood Daisy's problem, but actually HAD the problem. Now what are the odds of this, do you think???? LOL!

Love,

Polly

HA HA...not for poor Daisy of course. Lamb and rice is considered very easy to digest. I remember way back when I worked at the local animal hospital that was the diet for animals with upset GI systems. My sister who majored in Animal Science always has had the opinion that you are better off going to vet. They really understand the whole system, and are probably better docs (no offense Polly) because they have to work with a patient who can't tell them what is wrong.

Hope Daisy improves. You and Rusty are good companions for her knowing what you both know about diet and it's effect on our systems.

Hi Polly, my daughters Pom has MC as well. Isn`t that an odd coincidence that you two met. They found Wooys at the same time I was in the hospital in 2004. He is doing as well as I am and is not on any meds. Love, Carol

I find this so bizarre!!! But like they say, some animals are just like people!! I wonder if these dogs being diagnosed have any fidgety, nervous, type characteristics???? Just wonder what sets it off in them???

WOW!

Maybe this explains why so many of us are animal-lovers the "colon-kinship" we share w/dogs

I am seriously tempted to call a vet next time I get sick - my primary is nothing to write home about...

If I remember correctly, from reading on Dogtorj's site, in the past, he considers gluten to be the main trigger for cats and dogs turning up with MC. (Most of them don't take NSAIDs regularly, nor do they suddenly stop a smoking habit, etc.) As Polly has pointed out, predators did not evolve eating grains.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

How do you explain my cat who eats wood! And baskets (we had to hide the kids' easter baskets not only from them, but from Molly too).

Polly when I worked at the Humane society in Oklahoma.....I saw 4 cases of that. One was diagnosed w/colitis and three others were diagnosed with IBS....sooooooo I for one believe. Animals get some of the same things we get. Love Oma

Kind of amazing that you two bumped into each other (so to speak). Lucky dog to have a vet AND a friend who understands what is wrong.

It makes sense to me that a dog could have MC since they seem to get so many of the other diseases that we get.

Give her ears a nice scratch from me next time you see her.

I'm sorry I laughed, but I thought about my sister's Great Dane. In his later years he also had stomach problems... I sympathize with anybody who has a pooch with those issues. JJ

JJ,

I would too!!! At least I had a few seconds to get to the potty (most of the time). Poor dog has to tell someone and then wait for them to let him out!!
