DRATZ!!!!! report from GP
Not about the BRAIN----so I guess they still trying to figure that one out
Its my IRON----low and I was using that Black Strap Molasses--
So I have to go in and see what(which I already know) is to be done--
Thankfully my *lipids* were all reading fine----Am sure they would be better if I didnt cheat with the sweets but I am a Sweet-EATER CHEATER~~~~~
Anyone know Xactly what does the *intravenous* contain???
Sounds like a *dumb* question to ask ---I could go and Google but am sure it would make me a nervous wreck----
Anyway I know when I see GP he will Xplain it all--next step Hematologist-that he had told me last year---if the Iron level didnt go up~~~~
Perhaps thats why I am so fatigued all the time!!!
Thanks all--

Barbara,
You should not have to go to a specialist for Procrit, because it is even prescribed for home use. There is another brand called Epogen. The generic name of the product is Epoetin Alfa.
If you get an infusion by IV, the material used is usually either iron sucrose, or iron dextran, but I don't know if there are any other ingredients in those solutions.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Barb,
Yes, Mom has anemia issues. However, they say her anemia goes along with a blood disease where your body makes too many blood platelets. It's kinda rare and the places I have found on the internet don't seem think it amounts to much........ but according to her doctor it can cause a lot of problems and if not treated it results in death much earlier. The average survival rate after diagnosis is about 15 years..... or so I read in one article. I can't tell you the name of it off the top of my head. I'd have to look it up. She takes the generic of Agrilyn to keep her platelets down.
Anyway, I asked her hematologist why her hemoglobin levels won't stay up (even taking iron and trying to eat better). He said it goes along with the disease. Typical MD answer. Guess they get tired of explaining things.
So, Barb, I kind of got off subject...sorry. She does see a specialist but because of the blood disease. I have no idea if the Procrit would do the same job for you as an intravenous infusion. Probably not because I'll bet your Dr. had a good reason for suggesting the intravenous infusion.
No harm in asking though.
Love, Shirley

Barbara,
My ISP stopped responding last night, so I couldn't edit my post, above, but I wanted to add this:
Procrit works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. This is certainly nothing like taking an iron supplement, which may be why your doctor told you that there is no way to get supplelmental iron by means of an injection. He may not think that this would be suitable for you.

Thanks for that information, Tex. That's something I didn't know and hadn't thought to look up. It makes more sense to me now. Mom's RBC is always a little below the low parameters on the lab sheet. Dr. said that is normal for her disease. Her HGB varies quite a bit. When it's below 12 they will give her a Procrit shot.
