Trader Joe's finds...

Post by CAMary »

I like this store very much - and have found some new treats there recently....

1) they have their own brand of GF rice tortillas - they are quite good - we had fajitas the other night....they are less expensive and much tastier than the ones I previously found frozen @ Whole Foods...

2) Virgil's rootbeer - good stuff!! I have resisted trying it due to the cost @ the grocery store/health food stores. It is only $3.99 @ TJ's for a 4-pack - quite a good deal - and boy is that stuff yummy

3) cinnamon almonds - these contain only almonds, cinnamon and sugar. They are tasty and hold well. I've started to keep a bag in my car as a satisfying on-hand snack. As it gets warmer, it is harder to find appropriate items that can stay in a warm car...

I wish we had a Trader Joe's around here. I bought a bunch of those expensive rice tortillas, about a year ago, but I notice that I didn't eat very many of them. <sigh>

That's a heck of a good price for Virgil's. It's $6.50 a 4-pack around here, (when you can find it). Even special ordering it, several cases at a time, I've only been able to get a 10% discount, which still makes it pretty pricey.

Are the cinnamon almonds also under their own brand?

Thanks for the info.

We don't have Trader Joe's either. I miss it terribly. Also miss Wegmans, which we had just gotten in VA right before we moved. Oh well, we'll just have to live vicariously through you lucky folks!

I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Within 10 miles of my house we have a Wegman's, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Just getting the time to get there is sometimes tough and it's only 10 miles. Working just eats up the time. Retirement in 7 years - YEAH!

I'm lucky like Mags. Wegman's is only 2 miles away and Whole Foods and T.J.'s about 8 mi.

Mary, what is the brand of the rice tortillas? The only brand I have tried is Food for Life and I can't tolerate them. Sigh.

Thanks for the tips. Have you tired the Sharon's sorbet at WF and T.J.? I can only tolerate the raspberry one, but my hubby is hooked on the coconut.

Love,

Polly

I was at TJs a few days ago and I had a bag of those cinnamon almonds in my pantry, so I opened them up. Terrific!

I also bought tart montmorency dried cherries in a bag. It was under their label, but I've bought the same thing in a different bag at the local co-op. They are really good in trail mix and in cereal. Just cherries, sugar, sunflower oil.

I'm amazed that I've learned to like rice milk on buckwheat or rice cereal.

I just ordered about a dozen items from Celiac.com's store. It was pretty easy shopping because they list the allergens right up front. I'll let you know how they taste. The flax crisps were pretty bad.

Polly/Tex-

Both the tortilas and almonds are their house label. I tried the food for life tortillas - they tasted like cardboard!! These are good - and say GF right on the label! I just checked - thay also contain tapioca flour and xanthan gum - so may not work for some of you MIs....

I will look for Sharon's sorbet - that sounds delicious....in the meantime, I've become a Virgil's addict - now that I can afford to

Hello Kitchen Buddies and Paleo Pals-

Been very busy at work and often feel like the Peanuts cartoon kid that walks around in a cloud of dust. But so it goes.

I looked at the rice tortillas when it was first brought up some time ago and to my dismay found that the one brand I could find contained tapioca flour like so many of the other gluten free bread products.

A few months into my recovery I found that the gluten free breads made the D far worse. Commenced from their to a grain free diet that is now going on five years and simply put, feel better every year.

About two years ago a dear friend brought me a loaf of tapioca flour bread hoping that if she fed me something she would not miss me because she could not see me behind the support column in the middle of the shop. After eating one slice their was no question that tapioca flour was the last thing in the world that I should eat.

Fortunately with the wonders of the Paleo diet my weight has slowly come up and stabilized at a comfortable 165 and I often have more energy than I know what to do with. And my friend now whistles if she can’t see me. Hahahah!

By all rights Tapioca should work for us in that it is a root vegetable but it sure doesn't work for me .

For those still eating lots of gluten free products that contain tapioca and are still having problems, IMHO, you might consider a trial of eliminating tapioca.

To your continued recovery .

Morning Matthew,

What a great point you brought up and I am a strict GF person and just keep having bad D problems. I just might try eliminating the tapioca and see if that helps. I hate eliminating something that is in the only treats I can find, but what the heck with all the other things I have eliminated, what"s one more.

Thanks for the tip.

Love, Maggie

Hmmm, that's interesting about the tapioca. I like gf products that have tapioca flour because their consistency/texture is better than the rice ones. But I often feel a bit bloated after having sandwiches on EnerG tapioca bread. I've always figured it was because I only have sandwiches on the weekends. During the week, lunch consists of either leftover dinner food, or a salad with grilled chicken on it.

Hmmmmmmmm. Okay, now that everyone is coming up with all this negative news on tapioca, I have to admit that I gave it up last year, after trying it for a while, because it gave me D. At the time, I just assumed that it was probably the milk that was causing the problem, but now that I look back, not long after that, I found that I can tolerate milk. I don't understand why tapioca would be a problem, but the evidence doesn't look good, does it.

Thanks for bringing that up, Matthew. It's always a good idea to compare notes, isn't it.
