Final Report On My Avenin, (Oats), Challenge

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Okay, here's a quick recap: About 12 weeks ago, I started eating oats, (cereal), certified to be wheat free, twice a week, for about 6 weeks. I stopped eating it when I started noticing increasing reaction symptoms, but I stopped too late, because I was at the point where the D had already become chronic, (although not severe). You can check my previoius topics about this project, if you want to review additional details:

A couple of days ago, the D finally stopped, so I think that I'm over the reaction. This is probably just a coincidence, but I note that I ate oats for about six weeks, and it subsequently took another six weeks for the reaction to come to an end.

Be aware that I may be an undiagnosed celiac, however, so this oats trial may not apply specifically to MCers. I say this because my BMs during the reaction period were very foul-smelling, and had that tell-tale greenish color, reminiscent of celiac reactions to gluten.

I also note that the symptoms were never very severe, during this reaction. I only had uncontrollable, liquid, D, a few times. Most of the time, my BMs had the consistency of paste. Bloating was a problem only for about a day or so after eating oats, and it wasn't anywhere near as severe as I used to experience, before I adopted the GF diet. Back in those days, I used to bloat so badly that I was afraid that I might bust a gut, on some days.

Anyway, FWIW, my Great Oat Challenge of 2007 is now officially over, (I hope). This satisfied my curiosity about eating oats - at least for a while. LOL.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Guinea Pig!

And thanks for doing this. I have decided NOT to try oats based upon your experience. Especially since I have more intolerances than you to begin with. Glad you are back to normal.

Love,

Polly

You farmers are either gutsy or glutens for punishment...

Thanks for taking this challenge on and reporting your results. I've learned alot, especially about avenin. No oats for me either.

Love,
Joanna
