Hello Wendy
It took me some time to get used to my machine, or rather the mask part of it. they actually gave me the wrong one to start with. I tried a couple out in the hospital in overnight stays & some how they made the mistake of giving me the one that I hated. I eventually bought one that swivels so that it gives you more freedom of movement. I can actually sleep on my tummy, which I am doing at the moment so that I can have a heat pack under my pelvis which relieves some of the discomfort from bladder & bowel problems.
I have found that the humidifier helps a lot & a cover over the hose from it to the mask helps keep the air warm in winter.
I don't know about the REM sleep, but they found when I did the tests that I stopped breathing for up to 38 seconds at a time, many times during the night.
I find that I sleep much better & feel more alert the next day after I started using it. There have been times when the big D is prevalent that it stays off, but mostly I just undo the hose & leave the mask on when the loo beckons, much quicker. Reckon that if a burgular broke in he would get the daylights frightened out of him if he ran into me.
Love
Liz

Liz,
Thanks for sharing your cpap experience with me. I am hopeful that it will help, though I do hear that it takes a while to get used to it. My doc gave me some Ambien to take while I'm getting used to it. As he said, if you never get used to wearing it, you just won't use it, so what's the point?
That's a good tip to just unhook the mask when needed--we all know how often that can happen!
Thanks!
Wendy
