It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

ok, here's the scoop - rather dissapointed:
No sign of colitis - no biopsies either!
Internal hemmies - already knew that
GERD - nothing new
Hiatal Hernia - nothing new
Says I have IBS - lots of acid in the stomach - told me to increase fiber grrrrrrrrrrr
Also said he removed a polyp from my stomach although it is benign. I looked this up on the net and it is rare but can be caused by excessive acid.
I go to see him on the 25th, which is good because Larry don't remember much of the results - another grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!! It took me a day and a half to remember what I did!
I have a terrible sore throat yet today and the procedure was on Thursday. I bought some lozenges and some throat spray. My tonsils are swollen again so I am hoping that I didn't get an infection from the scope. Remember I had strep and tonsilitis about 10 days ago. I also had a terrible gas bubble in my upper back that finally is better today. Couldn't breath or move my right arm very well.
I also had to have more than usual medication so I don't remember any of either procedure. Guess that's a good thing. I'll have to ask when I see the doc "why".
It's been a rough week. The prep wasn't too bad (mixed with gatorade) until the last glass (64 oz worth). I started vomiting then but it really wasn't as bad as that awful swamp water!!!!
On another note, Larry's dad had surgery and we believe it was successful! He is healing well and they are trying to regulate his blood flow right now and then he can go home. Then WW3 will start - long story but it is going to be a nightmare!!!!!
Thanks for asking, my friends!!!! I've been lurking but not feeling real well. Gonna take a nap now and then go to the hospital for visiting later.
Love to all,
Mars

Mars,
That is a bit disappointing. I hope he had a good reason for not taking biopsies, (though I can't think of any, offhand). <sigh>
Has your doc ever considered licorice root, to help protect the lining of your stomach? This article in the Chemical and Engineering News, contains a lot of info on the benefits of licorice root on the digestive tract. If you have a hypertension problem, though, it may not be feasible for you.

You have to go down toward the bottom of the page, to get to the really good stuff in that article.
I hope you recover quickly, from all the unpleasant side effects of the exams, and I hope that WW3 doesn't materialize.

Interesting article, Wayne - thanks! I DO have high blood preasure which is regulated nicely with medication. I wonder if a moderate dose would help me???? I'll ponder that for awhile.
Also - one of the comments the GI made that I forgot to mention was that my spasming bowls and IBS are caused by NERVES!!!!
It never fails to amaze me how the docs seem to do something right one time (took biopsies to diagnose me) and then don't do it again when doing this exam. Makes me think that I'm going thru this crap for nothing. AND, it is the same GI who found the colitis the first time!!!! Crazy. sigh........
Throat is getting worse - feels like knives in the back of my throat while swallowing dinner - guess I'm back to liquids until it heals. Hopefully I didn't get an infection - maybe it is just irritated fromt the scope and the cauterization of the polyp. Either way,

That does make one wonder what your doc is thinking. Maybe he thinks that MC just runs it's course, and then it's done.
You can get deglycyrrizinated licorice, (with the glycyrrhizic acid removed). It's used to treat peptic and gastric ulcers, and has no hypertensive side-effects, so that might be an option, if your doc doesn't think the regular version is suitable for you.
I've never had an endoscopy exam from that end, so I don't know if a sore throat is to be expected, or not, but if it gets serious, you might need to get it checked out. One never knows what you might pickup in a clinic, or hospital. <sigh>

Hi Mars, I`m glad it`s over but you sure seem to go through an awful lot. I would get that sore throat checked out....have had that one myself and was a little hoarse but not sore. Same with my husband and daughter.
Aren`t doctors strange sometimes? My family doctor seems to think my colitis is "all healed" now and the flare I had for about 3 weeks was from a virus. I was so sick the day I saw him I didn`t argue the point but just said that Flagyl helped me before so I would take it. He is the same doc who saved my life in 2004 when I was running to the bathroom 50 or more times a day. He even told me I was very near death and it was all because of MC, not IBS or a virus.
I wish you the best of luck, dear lady. Try to think only of you for awhile. Love, Carol

Hello Mars. Hard to understand how they could not bother doing biopsies. I wonder about these doctors sometimes. It is easy not to see something if you don't look.
Hope your throat gets better soon. Probably would not hurt to see about it though in case you have picked something up. I often wonder about their sterilisation procedures, especially when there is a production line which is often the way it is done - you know how they book everyone in for the same day & do one after the other.

Boy, that is a bit of a disappointment.
FWIW my current GI dr (that I like) is of the opinion that MC dies off and just goes away. He said he rarely finds it again. Though if the treatment for bacterial overgrowth doesn't work then perhaps I'll have him look again and he WILL take biopsies cause I won't settle for otherwise.
And it being NERVES is BS, it can exacerbate a problem but won't ever be a cause for chronic problems.
And finally, how did he dermine high acid? Ask him that please as I'm interested in this aspect.
Thanks,
Mike

Guess I'll add this to my bit about Bacterial Overgrowth, but take a look at this: (my emphasis in bold)
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/quer ... s=17438416
Role of Gut Bacteria in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Here's the study they quote:
Production of an autoinducer of growth by norepinephrine cultured Escherichia coli O157:H7.

So what does this mean? You get stressed and you get an increase in bacteria within the gut. If you have SIBO and are stressed or any type of dysbiosis and get stressed the results would be exactly what we get. GI Symptoms.Stress has been associated with worsening of IBS symptoms24 and linked to visceral hypersensitivity, a common feature in IBS.25 Increased sympathetic activity is also well described in IBS.26–29 Although these relationships have largely been explained by central mechanisms,30 a role for gut bacteria in the altered brain-gut interaction of IBS is supported by experiments testing the effect of host stress signals on gut bacteria. Norepinephrine, the stress mediator, was reported to increase the number of bacteria by a whopping 10,000-fold in just 12 hours.31 Could the worsening of IBS symptoms by stressful events be explained by the host response to norepinephrine-induced expansion of gut bacterial community?
Here's the study they quote:
Production of an autoinducer of growth by norepinephrine cultured Escherichia coli O157:H7.
Escherichia coli O157:H7 were cultured in the presence of norepinephrine to generate conditioned media. The presence of a growth-inducing factor(s) in the conditioned media was examined by measurements of the ability of conditioned media to support the growth of fresh cultures of E coli O157:H7. Supplementation of fresh cultures with as little as 0.024% (v/v) norepinephrine conditioned medium resulted in increased growth as compared to controls, thereby indicating the presence of an autoinducer of growth. Analysis of the production kinetics for the autoinducer during the generation of conditioned media indicates that it differs from other more well characterized autoinducers. It is proposed that the neurohumoral environment of the host may contribute to the production of bacterial growth factors.
Hmmmmmmmmm, interesting.
I don't go back to the doc until the 25th, I think it is. I'll be asking some questions, that's for sure.
I am extremely disappointed that he didn't do a little more exploring - like take BIOPSIES!!!!!!!!!!!
We'll see what he has to say about the excisive acid in my stomach. I'm just remembering through a fog so I could have misquoted him.
Love,
Mars
