Policosinol.....anybody tried it?

Post by Arosebud »

A while back I bought some One A Day multivitamins, which now seem to come in many formulas, Womens, Mens, Seniors, etc etc. I bought the one labeled Cholesterol Plus. It contains policosinol. I am not big on herbs, etc. at all. Didn't expect anything special to happen. Within a couple of days, amazing!! firm stools! I went back and read the label then looked up policosinol on the computer....it said nothing about this effect. This started a period of time I call remission. Next time husband brought home some regular multivitamins and after a short time, the loose stuff returned. Also I was messing up with my diet as well, because things were so good for soooo long, I just got careless. Yesterday, went and bought those Cholesterol Plus vitamins and took one. Today, again, voila! same good effect. Don't know if this has ever been discussed, but I think I may be on to something.....??

Sylvia,

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle. That's interesting, to say the least. It seems to have a very potent effect, to work that fast. I think we need to research this a bit, to see where it might lead. Thanks for the information. I learn something here virtually every day.

I can't find any list of significant side effects of policosanol, but I note that it is quite common for many/most prescription cholesterol-reducing drugs to list constipation as a side effect.

Here's what the Mayo Clinic says about it's cholesterol-reducing effects, based on more recent research:

P S I'm still trying to find some of those articles I promised, and I'm compiling a list of links. Unfortunately, the most important one, (describing a unique treatment trial that involved feeding nothing but fatty red meat to patients who were all unresponsive to conventional treatment), is on an old computer that refuses to boot, and, (so far at least), I haven't been able to think of the correct key words that will allow me to find it in a Google search. I'll eventually find it, if I have enough time to search for it, and if it rains, I'll have much more free time. Until it does rain, though, I have to spend most of my time working. I may have to break down and fix that old computer, to see if I can find the "bookmark" I need.

Hi Sylvia,
I can't remember what all is in One A Day vitamins, but something prevented me from choosing that brand.
Anyway, pertaining to the cholesterol kind that they sell, which evidently doesn't do anything for reducing the numbers, I can give you a hint that I'd bet money on, that would give you the "ole viola", too.
I don't know if you take a calcium supplement, but Citracal probably would give you the firmed stools... It sure worked for me.
Something to think about trying..
