Why Are We Importing So Much Food,

Post by tex »

when we are supposedly known as the "Breadbasket For The World"? According to this article, "In fiscal 2006, U.S. consumers ate about 8.9 million FDA-regulated food import product lines". That's 8.9 million different imported food products, and the number is 50% higher than it was just three years ago. That's an incredibly large number. Why is this category rising so fast? Do people perceive imported food as safer than domestic food? Healthier? Cheaper? Tastier? Are they even aware that they are buying imported food in many cases?

It's no wonder that our foreign trade balance is a disaster area. A high percentage of virtually everything we consume, is imported. Silly me, I thought our main import problem was our dependence on foreign oil.

Well, I guess I have wondered before why so many of our fruits and veggies seem to be imported.

It's absolutely crazy isn't it.

I'm wondering if the main "food" we produce is grain and soybeans. (yuck) Perhaps thats where our status of "breadbasket" comes from.
