Evening in the ER - since my life is so dull!!

Post by CAMary »

Just what I needed (not!). My daughter, for some reason, decided to "jump" off the slide of the swingset in the backyard. I was in the kitchen, and heard her screaming bloody murder and saw her laying in the grass, clutching her arm...

So off we went - luckily, no one wants to sit next to a screaming child in the ER waiting room, so we were seen quickly and taken straight back to x-ray.

They couldn't see any fracture, but because she was complaining of her wrist, and couldn't wiggle all of the fingers, they can't rule out a growth plate fracture...so I need to call our ped tomorrow and get an orthopedic referral and have her seen next week to have it re-checked. She has a splint on, and is *not* happy about it (however, this may be the trick to get her to give up thumb-sucking! ).

It wasn't bad as far as ER visits go only 2.5 hours total. I'm sure our health insurance provider is wondering what the he$* is up with my family and all of the claims (we had an insurance change 4/1 - so they get to pay for 2 of my 3 surgeries  )

I am hoping and praying for an uneventful weekend!

Oh Boy, I'm glad it wasn't worse. The things kids do to themselves sure aren't funny sometimes. I hope there won't be any lasting damage and she'll recover soon. Perhaps that will teach her to stop jumping..... and perhaps not.

A few years ago I had seen my granddaughter climb and jump from my daughter's 6 ft board fence around the back yard. I mentioned it to my daughter and she didn't think it was too big a deal. A few months later she was jumping out of the school playground swing (as she was swinging, of course) and broke her arm. I haven't seen or heard of her jumping from anything since.

You are right, that emergency room visit wasn't too bad regarding time waited, but any ER visit is horrible.

Mary, I can sympathize with you! Last year my daughter fell out of a tree and broke her thumb, then about 3 weeks later my son fell and we thought he broke his wrist. Fortunately, it was only sprained, but you can't take chances on things like that, can you?

One fall between the 2 boys we had 5 ER visits--one kid had 2 broken feet (jumping off chairs and pool tables), and the other had 3 sets of stiches. I'm sure that our name was red flagged at that hospital!!

How is doing today? Seems like with medical things, when it rains, it pours!

How are you feeling?

Things seem okay today - she says it still hurts, however, so she isn't resisting the sling/splint...I sent her to preschool and she sucked up all of the extra attention! Plus it was the Mother's Day Tea, so I know she wouldn't want to miss it...I got an orthopedic appt for Tuesday afternoon, so we will know then if there is indeed a fracture...

Yes, Barbara, I was wondering last night if this happened to help take my mind off things! It is a crazy/busy time of year with kids/school/end-of-year stuff - so I suppose I shall have plenty of distractions!

I am doing pretty well. I went to a support group meeting this week - that always helps! It is better if I don't think too much about the actual surgery stuff. I just want it to be over!

Also, I just got a call confirming that my insurance is going to pay 90% of the genetic testing costs! So that is great news. I had the blood drawn this week - so thankfully that is moving along. I have 2 pre-op appts - one for May 30 with the regular surgeon - then the day before the surgery, I go and see the plastic surgeon - and apparently he will draw all over me his "roadmap" for the procedure - should be interesting!! Closest I'll ever get to having a tattoo!

My husband just laughs it all off - he mentioned neither of the other 2 kids made it 4.5 years for their first ER visit! He jokes about how this will be our revenge for wimpy raises this year "we'll just suck them dry on the benefits, LOL!"

Laugh, cry - whatever - I'm thinking tonight it's :bath2:
