Polly-found some info on BC and diet....

Post by CAMary »

I need to print and read through all of it...it appears that soy (certain types - unrefined? perhaps) is actually considered possibly beneficial. I find it interesting, as this breaks down pre/post menopausal BC, also it takes into consideration the hormone-receptor status of the tumor...

Someone posted the link @ breastcancer.org, but it was compiled right nearby @ UCSF...

Interesting, Mary!

Did you see the article in the paper today about the research concluding that exposure to many common chemicals (pesticides, food additives, cosmetic ingredients, etc.) may cause breast cancer - especially due to early exposure in infancy/childhood?

I saw where June 8th is the big day. I know it can't come soon enough for you. Will keep everything crossed and send my best positive thoughts. I know you will do beautifully, and once again, I REALLY think you have chosen a very smart option.

Love,

Polly

My mother figures this is what caused hers...she used to play in the apple orchard and stream that ran through it while my grandfather (her father) sprayed the apples with lead arsenic! Not to mention she was part of the generation of DDT and such. Not to mention overall lack of understanding of environmental issues.

Good luck Mary with your surgery. You will do fine and it will be a relief I'm sure.

It can't come soon enough for me - my gut is a mess - 5 weeks to mentally prepare is TOO long for something like this!

I think the chemical thing might be part of it - but if that was *it*, many more people would be affected. I think some people are genetically predisposed - and one, or a couple of factors are enough to tip the scales...

It's the only way I can rationalize this - how can a person who has never taken a hormone in her life (a conscious decison, on my part!) develop hormone-receptor positive BC, while people who pump themselves full of synthetic hormones over many years, for various reasons, don't?? I know my grandma started taking some type of HRT (in the early 50's - it was the new wonder drug!), and 6 months later developed cancer...

Growing up, my mother was always chemical-wary. Even when our dog had fleas, she wouldn't "fog" our house - thought it was a bad idea (instead we ripped up the carpets, and ditched the old couch!)

I did however, eat my share of crap filled w/preservatives as a kid (Twinkies, anyone  )- so who knows?
