Dee, I Finally Got Around To Trying Hempmilk

Post by tex »

I bought some, probably at least six or seven weeks ago, (a couple of weeks after you brought it to our attention, whenever that was), but I hadn't gotten around to actually trying it. I had some today, on rice cereal, and I have to say - it's great stuff. It's richer and creamier than milk, with a hint of a milk-shake flavor, (at least that's my impression). I didn't get in any hurry to try it, because it has a great shelf life, (I ordered a case, and it's dated for Dec. 11, 2007).

Now that I finally got up the nerve to try it, and found that it exceeds my expectations, I plan to switch to it, and drop dairy products completely, (again). I have a hunch that casein is the source of my arthritis symptoms, which have been on the increase lately. A few weeks should tell the story.

Thanks for bringing Hempmilk to our attention.

Love,
Tex

I had to order it online, but you might have better luck in your area. Here's a store locator:

Hi Tex!
Happy to hear that you finally got to try the hemp milk.
I have used it in many things that call for dairy and even coconut and chocclate cream pies!!!!! I made the mashed potatoes for Easter and none of the family members even questioned it!! Works for soups, on cereal, scalloped potatoes, if you need a white sauce or if you want to use it for a creamed soup, like potato, tomato, asparagus. I could go on and on!!!
I need to go restock because I've already gone thru my 16 cartons...
That tells you how often I use it!!!! And it's GOOD for you!!!

JJ!!!
Whole Foods carries it and Wild Oats.. I'm thinking that Whole Foods is going to buy out the Wild Oats stores if I'm not mistaken. My HF store doesn't carry it but I'm sure if I'd ask them they'd probably start getting it in. I figure they carry all of the soy and nut milks, so why not the hemp milk.. I sampled the hemp seeds at Whole Foods and they are like eating nuts... Could easily eat a handful of those a day. They are quite pricey, though..

It tastes a lot better than it sounds. I'm using the original "vanilla" flavor. I think they have at least one other flavor.

Okay, mine says "Vanilla", so apparently it's not the original version. It has several things going for it to offset the cost. For one thing, instead of a shelf life of a week or two, it has a shelf life of 8 or 9 months, and that's without refrigeration. Of course it needs to be refrigerated after opening.

Based on a serving size of one cup, milk has 8 grams of total fat, hempmilk only 3 grams. Milk has 35mg of cholesterol, whereas hempmilk has 0mg. Milk has no potassium, hempmilk has 113grams. Milk has no iron, hempmilk has 15%RDA, and hempmilk has a little over 50% more calcium than milk, which could be an important consideration, if that happens to be the main reason why you're drinking milk. On the negative side, it has almost twice the carbs as milk, almost twice the sugars, and half the protein. The biggest difference, of course, is that it has 0 casein, which can be worth a lot, when you're casein intolerant.

It's a little pricey, all right, but cheaper than bottled water at a lot of stores, and with hempmilk, at least you're getting some nutrition for your money, (of course, that can be said for milk, also, if you can tolerate it). But, I agree with you - I doubt that anyone who is satisfied with milk, could justify switching.

Morning Barbara,

I hope I haven't built it up more than is warranted. Your taste buds may disagree with mine. LOL. I do think it's the best tasting "artificial" milk that I've tried. It has a good balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, too.

Most dairy cows have a high percentage of grain in their diets, and as a result, the milk that you find in the supermarket, usually has a high level of omega-6, and a low level of omega-3, fatty acids. Way, way high, when compared with the "ideal" ratio of two to one. If you can find milk from grass-fed cows, it will have a ratio much closer to "ideal", but that is a fairly rare commodity, due to the higher cost of production, for milk from grass-fed cows.

Luve,
Galahad

Hi All!!
I buy the original flavor because of my cooking and baking preferences..
I bet the vanilla is very good, so I may buy a few of those to have on hand for my cereal and smoothies, and for some baked items.
The vanilla and chocolate would be good for drinking.
I've experimented pretty much with the original and I'm not disappointed with the product.

Love
