Hi

Can you tell me your Internet speed? I was wondering how quick it could be in the US... And how much do you pay for it?

Hi Tessa,

I use to pay for a 'dial up connection' through a local phone company which was about $10 a month. That just got me connected to the internet but the speed was determined by how fast my modem was- 56k. Wasn't really speedy.

Recently, we changed from a dial up service to broadband ( I'm not sure this is the right term) through our cable company- I think it's about the same price of $10 each month. What is does, is keeps my computer online all the time and it's very fast. I like it.

My husband recently set up a wireless router thingy from my computer to a second computer in the house. It cost about $90 initially for the router and it allows internet access for a second computer for no monthly fee.

I've had alot of problems with internet access on the second computer since he set it up and I'm about to throw it in the trash.

Just kidding, I just haven't figured out the right settings yet, I hope.

How do you connect to the internet and what does it cost?

Joanna,
I had a lot of problems when we connected our router. Found out that the setup defaulted to the same IP address. It takes two different IP addresses for both computers to access the internet at the same time.

I forget how I figured it out but you might be able to go to your "Help" and get the answer. Trent, (Christine's hubby) might also be able to help you there!

We now have DSL and it costs us about $40 a month.
The speed is quite a bit better than dial-up but sometimes it get bogged down also.

Fyi, gals,

At work here, we often have our clients test their internet speed to determine if that is contributing to their problems with our internet-based software.

There is a website called www.2wire.com that will tell you your internet speed. I would suggest 3 tests and then average your speed.

Just go to 2wire.com, and click on "speed meter" at the top. It will tell you your speed. Click "Run Test Again" at the bottom to get it to run again..

Averaged came to 91.6. The first time went really quick like when everying is working right. The next two acted like when it's starting to really get bogged down.

Analysis - I sure don't know.

It all depends - if you're dial up, you have a dedicated line and probably a more stable speed. If you have cable modem, it's not a dedicated line/IP, so your speed will probably vary more.. we have a T3 line at work, and I don't believe it's dedicated, since MANY users can access the internet at any time.

I'm on an old phone line, (with no hope of any other options, out here in the boondocks), and so my speeds tested:

This is with a state-of-the-art 56K modem, of course. Sucks, doesn't it.

Yep, Wayne, it does suck. We were on dial-up for a long time. Finally they made DSL available. It was a wonderful improvement. Nothing like what Christine has but wonderful just the same (until it bogs down). I'm not complaining though. I'm very grateful to have it.

¡Hi Tessa de Nueva York! I use dial-up through AT&T WorldNet that costs $21.95 a month for unlimited access. My connection speed is usually 28,800. I probably will change later this year to cable as it is much faster.

We, (my husband and myself) have ADSL at 512 kb, no time limit, at 39 Euros/month (around 39 Dollars) In a month, we will get: 1000 Kb at the same price.

Other companies here in Spain offer ADSL at a speed of 4000 Kb, no time limit for around 35 Euros / month, including local & national phone calls FREE.
We have so many companies nowadays, that they are "fighting" to make the best offer and get more clients... (which is good for us: consumers).

Thank you for sharing your information. I really had no idea of how your speed and prices could be. Now we now more.

What I've heard is that it is so much more dependant on your phone (or other) lines than on your computer equipment. Look at poor Wayne here ith 28K even though he's got a 56K modem. I used to be in that boat, except when downloading stuff, it never really seemed to get above 5 or 6K/sec.

I'm on DSL now. I get a break so I think I only pay $25 or $30, but thats because I have local phone service with the same company. Otherwise they charge around $40 I think. Looks like mine runs aroun 120K/sec.
