Paging Mike!
Hi Mike!
I saw your question to me in another post. You wondered if I ever tried the probiotic/antibiotic combo. No, I haven't. Mainly because I have been feeling so well that I didn't want to rock the boat.
I'm not sure why I am feeling so terrific - maybe it's due to extra vitamin D or perhaps to the fact that I have greatly increased my seafood intake recently (omega 3s). At any rate, I am very lucky right now that the poop is perfect, my energy level appears to be increasing (I've just upped my run from 3 mi. 3 times a week to 3-4 mi. 4-5 times), and my mood has been almost buoyant. The only other new thing I have added are meditation classes.
Anyway, I feel guilty talking about this when others are suffering. But maybe it will offer hope. It has been about 5 years now since I started the elimination diet, and it is amazing that I feel better and better as each year goes on. I never would have believed it.
However, should I relapse, I would try the probiotics/antibiotics in a heartbeat. I am reserving that treatment for the future should it be needed. Also, I would not hesitate to take Entocort if I needed it. I am impressed by its effectiveness and minimal side effects.
Thanks for asking. And now, may I have an update from you, please?
Love,
Polly

Hi Polly,
Great to hear you're doing so well.
Interesting you should mention Vitamin D, there were some recent studies showing high dose Vitamin D helping to fight tuberculosis (Mycobacteria).
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entre ... h=17463418
So given that Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis is suspect in other IBD perhaps the Vitamin D you're taking helped you.

PS. If anyone reads this and decides to take high dose Vitamin D, please, please, please talk with your Dr first as there can be some very bad side effects if you're body can't handle this high dose.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, Hazel! That's as good a reason as any!
Mike, interesting about vitamin D and tuberculosis! Some of us here have always suspected an infectious cause for MC. I am not taking huge doses - only about 1200 IU per day. It's best to get a blood test to check vitamin D level before supplementing, as you have pointed out in the past.
Actually, I have been following the thread about your treatment with antibiotics with great interest, since you are a guinea pig for us with this treatment, so I should have requested that you continue to update us. Has it been 7 days now with the rifaximin? How long will you be taking it?
Love,
Polly
