Hi All:
Anyone here heard of Ischemic Colitis?
I have a friend who has been diagnosed with it recently. She's a friend I met through my dealings with eBay and we've become good pals. She has many other health issues also. She's only in her 30's. Apparently, she ended up in the ER last week and that's what the Dr.s say she has.
I'm going to research it after I finish here, but wondered what anyone here has to say about it?

Now, I'm no doctor, but if I'm not mistaken the Ischemic colitis is caused from the disruption of blood flow to the large intestine. Could be caused from high blood pressure, excess fluid in the large intestine, narrowing the arterial walls or a blood clot..
My sister had it 2 years ago and ended up in the ER and then a few days in the hospital on antibiotics. Since then she hasn't had any other episodes.
Hoping to hear that they found the cause of your friend's and that it isn't of a serious issue.

Dee is quite correct - ischemic colitis is caused by inadequate blood flow to the intestines, and it's a very serious issue, that has to be dealt with promptly, (unless the patient is very lucky), since it can easily have fatal consequences, if the tissue begins to die. If I remember correctly, whenever relatively young people have the problem, it's usually due to athletic endeavors, especially long distance running.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

You are quite correct. About 2 in 1,000 patients taking Lotronex developed IS, according to the manufacturer. The FDA places the risk at about 1 in 700, and some other sources say the risk could be as high as 1 in 300.

My friend was on Zelnorm and I don't know if that's a brand name, but I was on it and it was pulled from the shelves here in Canada about 2 months ago.
Thankfully, I haven't had any problems, but one of the problems people were developing was colon problems. My Dr prescribed it to me because of chronic constipation and it did help for awhile and then seemed to stop helping. Anyway, hopefully nothing will develop down the road.
I've mentioned a couple of times to her about Peg's CC and told her about this Board, but she hasn't responded, so maybe that isn't her thing.
Anyway, I hope she's feeling better now. She hasn't mentioned it since she told me about the trip to emergency, so I'm not pursuing the issue with her unless she brings it up again.
Peggy and Ronny were over for dinner on Sunday and she is still locked out at work - it's not actually her group that is on strike, but the company locked everyone out.
She's been very upset about it, but has been getting some temp work since Monday, so she's feeling better about things.
At least she's busy and earning some wages, so that's a plus.
Well, off to bed and thanks again for the info.

Hmmmmmmm. I hadn't heard about that risk, until you mentioned it. It appears that there have been about 20 cases of IS among Zelnorm users. Here is an FDA update, dated April 2, 2007. Apparently it was recalled for relabeling.

I was taking Lotronex for a short period of time about 1 1/2 to 2 years ago. I ended up in the emergency room with a blockage. Through help here, I got there before it got any worse and required surgery.
One of my docs also tried to prescribe Zelnorm, not for the constipation (because I don't have that) but because it was supossed to "regulate" your bowel movements. I chose NOT to take it. I couldn't see talking another pill just to "see" if it would work because of the possible side effects.
I hope your friend doesn't have any further problems. We're always here if she needs us.
