This Really Sucks - Another Preservative Risk Is Uncovered
Hi All,
Say it isn't so. I just checked the label on the Dr Pepper I'm drinking, (made with Pure Cane Sugar), and it's in there. In fact, it's in virtually all soft drinks, fruit juice, jam, and salad dressing. I also just finished eating an apple, and dang if it isn't in there too, though it wasn't added. It occurs naturally in apples, cranberries, prunes, and a few other things. <sigh>
I'm talking about the widely used preservative, sodium benzoate, which, when mixed with ascorbic acid, (vitamin C), forms benzene, which is, of course, a carcinogen. The big risk seems to involve DNA damage, under certain conditions.
A British molecular biologist, (who just happens to be named Peter Piper), is researching this topic, and he was interviewed for this article. However, the article fails to mention whether or not he picks any pickled peppers, as part of his normal work routine, not does it go into any detail about just where those pickled peppers might be, (if he did indeed pick any pickled peppers). I found that oversight to be a big disappointment, but the article is quite interesting, nevertheless. Here's the story.

Love,
Tex (whose DNA is probably a lost cause, by now)

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

May I be more compassionate and loving than yeterday*and be able to spot the idiots in advance
Bad timing. I'd given up soda this year, but with this low carb no daily no gluten yeast diet I'm on, I had to have something. I thought avoiding aspartame sweetened drinks would help, so I'm paying for Jones and Hansen's. <quick>
Hey, Hansen's Diet Kiwi/Strawberry doesn't have it! Jones does.
At least Diet Dr Pepper tastes like dreck so you know you're getting bad stuff. That's a good thing, no?
