Grrr... pre-op surprise......

Post by CAMary »

So I went to get my pre-op stuff done this morning - I met w/the surgeon yesterday - and he answered all of my questions.

SO the pre-op nurse says "oh, and I'm sure Dr. G mentioned they will put in a catheter since that is standard when surgery is longer than 4 hours..."

Me - "Uhh no - he didn't mention it...is it negotiable? - catheters give me a UTI - like clockwork - 48 hours later I will be miserable - I am 5/5 with this experience..." so she suggested I call my surgeon to discuss.

I called them (he is off on Thursdays) - the secretary seemed to think it was "non-negotiable" - but he would probably give me an RX, if I want, so I can treat as soon as symptoms occur - and I won't have to chase off and submit a urine sample while trying to recover...Gee thanks!!

I guess I was blindsided by this - and while it *may* not be a big deal in the scheme of things - I'm upset! I hate UTIs - especially if they can be easily prevented. I also have a high-capacity bladder - and can *easily* go 5 hours w/o peeing. I HATE having to take extra antibiotics, since I once had c-diff ...

If they try and tell me I need to take *stool softeners* afterwards - I may have to slap someone :mallet: :hissyfit:

Whine over,

Mary

I would be willing to bet they will give you some IV antibiotics post surgery,. Will that ward one off for you? I do hope this doesn't create you more problems...you certainly don't need any.

I was given a suppository when I had my hysterectomy and that sure got me going...I'd have probably been fine without but since pooping can be a problem after abdominal surgery I didn't argue. They were so impressed that I was pooping within hours of the suppository!

Hi Everyone!

No more surprises! Yeah! I've even made it through the week pretty well - staying busy has helped! Tomorrow (Thursday) I meet with the plastic surgeon so he can sketch all over me w/a sharpie! Then Friday I check in @ 10:30 for my noon surgery.

A dear friend set me up with a free month of Netflix, and I'm trying to write out everyone's schedule so Mike & Mom know where everyone needs to be! I went to the library today and loaded up on books, and picked up some post-surgical wear, as well.

I've been listening to a relaxation tape, and have my MP3 player loaded up with a bunch of new music. I haven't touched my Valium yet - but suspect I will need it to sleep tomorrow! :sleep2: We also took a couple of pictures (thank goodness for digital cameras - I'd never have the guts to get it developed!) - in case I ever want to remember what I looked like - or to see how the "redo" compares to the originals...I may never look, but thought I might regret *not* doing it.

I can't believe it is finally almost here. I just want to be done w/it all - I suspect I will feel a huge sense of relief when all is said and done. I'm e-mailing a woman who has UC and is having surgery on the same day as me! It's been nice to connect w/someone walking the same path...

Well, I'm going to have some tea, then go to bed!

Hi CA Mary!

Today's the day! It will be such a relief to have it all behind you. Best wishes for an uncomplicated surgery and uneventful recovery. How long will you be in the hospital? Will you have internet access?

We'll be anxiously awaiting your return. Good thoughts and prayers will be coming cross-country today for you.

Love,

Polly

Well, believe it or not, surgeon suspects I will go home on Saturday! Based on my quick bounce-back from lumpectomy procedures he thinks I will be good-to-go. They will keep me an extra day if I have issues from the anesthesia or uncontrolled pain - but b/c of my prior procedures, we are not anticipating it...They like to get you home ASAP to reduce chances of contacting a hospital-based infection.

Not sure if they have internet - but I won't be able to move my arms much at first - so I probably won't check in until mid-week...

Maybe I can get Mike to post for me...

Hi Mary,

Haven't checked in here much of late, and then, I'm sort of hit and miss. At any rate, glad I saw this post. For sure, you'll be in my thoughts and prayers as well.

Take care and let everyone wait on you hand and foot for as long as you can pull it off, ok. You deserve it, even if you weren't having this done!

Count me in as one who'll be looking for news from you after Friday. Sounds like you're expected to do exceptionally well.

Yours, Luce
