Oma, about that herb garden?

Post by gentle hugs »

When you mentioned about planting herbs, and your flowers and so forth, I thought you would be a good person to ask about planting a little garden box on my balcony. I have three balcony flower boxes with numerous flowers and so so forth planted, I am so proud of them, even if it was my friend who did the actual planting of most of them. But she gave me three beautiful ceramic planters for the deck also, so I wanted to plant some herbs in the largest one. It would be so nice to grow my own, and have them fresh all the time. Plus it gives me something to tend to while sitting outside. Plus all the smells are a bonus. Is there any rule of thumb when planting the herbs? Can they all go in together? As a rule in the past I did not have a green thumb, but I am learning. I am allergic to any touching of plants as well, but the itch can be dealt with. And once they are in, there isn't much weeding to do in

Hi there! I personally like to plant each herb separate, but I see no reason to not plant them together. I have planted mint and lemonbalm in the same planter. Also sage and rosemary. I sort of split the container in half and put sage in one half and rosemary in the other. I also Have planted a couple different types of mint in the same container with thyme. Today I planted some seeds of lavender and when they become seedlings I will put them out with the Lillies around one og my mesquite trees. the lillies are red and the lavender being purple will be great. As Long as you have a defining line between the herbs you should have no problem. I have never had one herb tasting like another I planted it with so it may be an experiment I'd like to follow with you. I am hoping to have enough sage to make smudge wands so I may go to the store and buy some more mature plants. Keep me informed I am intriged. Hope I helped somewhat there, but alas...I am not a pro at this....the lord just gave me a great interest in herbs. Love Oma

Thanks Oma, I will be sure to let you know how it goes. I wanted to plant some thyme and rosemary, for sure, maybe parsley and cilantro, I love using the parsley frest for Italian potatoe salad and the cilantro in homemade salsa. And did you know that rosemary is a great anti-inflamaoty, and I have been using it in aromatherapy oil for years in my bath. And now that you told me about planting lavender, I would like to plant that too. Lavendar is a great relaxant, calms nerves and is one of the aromatherapy oils that you can mix with anything basically to make it even better for your body. And I love the scent from lavendar, it is my all time favorite scent to have in my home. It is just refreshing. That and the scent of lilacs. But that isn't something I can do right now on the balcony. Like I said, with not being able to go out much and or do much, this is something that will give me pleasure all summer long. And it is pretty easy to maintain too.

We had a honking of a rainfall last night, but my planters are inside the rail, otherwise it would hit them too hard and ruin them. So they just got a nice sprinkle. I just love sitting outside when it is raining and watching the weather unfold. Usually Novarro my cat will join me, but not in the rain. Unless it is just a light rain where nothing goes onto the balcony, but he is very curious and has no fear, so I have to watch him, as the other day he decides that he would like totry watking around the balcony on the outside of the rail! My heart was in my throat, fortunately he listened to me to come in. He has his momment where he actually listens to me. I am going to put up a see through barrier so that I can feel safer when he is out there with me, so that he can still do the watching he loves to do. Lots going on always especially at night, loves the lights and noicse. In the morning though it is the millions of birds that he wants to check out! We have so many singing in the morning it can wake you up. We are across from a park too, so that helps. Anyway, that's it for me, have to go for a nap.

Have a great day

Those herbs will be great in one pot. I have used herbs and made my own tictures and concoctions for years. I took some left overhand lotion with very little scent and added lavender oil....smells great. I cook with many herbs and you are right about rosemary. I am excited for you. Protect your little baby there. Love Oma
