Rolling papers and gluten??
Hey All!
I have a quick question for you guys:
Do rolling papers have gluten on them? I ask because they have a bit of glue on one side of the papers that you lick to make the sides stick to each other.
My friend made me a cigarette with rolling papers around 630 pm last night. And I started to feel badly about 12 hours later (this morning I woke up early and had D and have stomach cramps, rumblings, etc).
So my bet is that it has gluten or something I ate yesterday has gluten but I didnt eat anything unusual.
Thanks for the help!
Andrew

Hey Maggie-
I catch your drift. I am still enjoying those times but much less now that I am an adult and married and have a future to look after.
Yeah I bet they have gluten in the glue as well but I wanted to see if anyone had done the research. I have tried to pull searches up on the internet and they are inconclusive.
Some say that wheat flour is contained in cigarettes but that since it is not getting to your intestine you should be fine. Well I thnk that is BS since you are inhaling it, getting it on your lips, tongue, throats etc... then just swallow and where does all that go? I would think right down to the intestines. But thanks for the thoughts Maggie

Andrew,

I suspect that the primary reason why cigarettes can mask the symptoms of celiac disease, (or gluten sensitivity of any other nature), is because of the salicylates in cigarettes. They include:
* benzyl salicylate
* ethyl salicylate
* isobutyl salicylate
* methyl salicylate
* phenethyl salicylate
* salicylaldehyde
plus some other additives that contain "hidden" salicylates, such as:
* apple juice concentrate, extract, and skins
* apricot extract and apricot juice concentrate
* black currant buds absolute
* cherry bark extract
* grape juice concentrate
* orange oil and extract
* plum juice
* prune juice concentrate
* raisin juice concentrate
* tea leaf extract
* wine and wine sherry
Those ingredients can be found in this cigarette ingredient list, if you're interested in seeing what else is in there:

It has long been claimed that quitting smoking is a trigger for MC, and this is well documented in the medical literature. I have a hunch that quitting smoking doesn't really trigger MC - it simply allows the symptoms that are already present, but masked by the salicylate "treatment" in the tobacco smoke, to be "unveiled". IOW, those patients didn't develop MC because they quit smoking - they already had it, and were just not aware of it, because they were already following a treatment program, (in the cigarette smoke). That's just my opinion, but I think the handwriting is on the wall.

This is from:The hidden gluten in cigarettes and cigarette rolling paper is in the paper and the glue. The tobacco itself and anything else you may choose to place in said rolling papers does not contain gluten (unless you run into flavored tobacco land, in which case all bets are off).
As for those who like to "roll their own". Tops and Job are NOT gluten free. Rizla's are however, and can be purchased in most smoke shops or online. I exclusively use Rizlas now. I have gotten giant gluten belly bloat from using Tops and Job rolling papers, and then I verified what the paper and glue was made out of. Rizla's are a Uk company, but there is no wheat in their paper.
Hope that helps somebody smile.gif
Oh... and smoking cigarettes can actually mask the symptoms of Celiac, or possibly delay onset. At least two studies have been done related to that.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
yes I did stumble across that forum and read that thread.
Why would the salicylates mask the symptoms? Would that be the same reason why people with UC tend to feel better when they smoke?
Thanks tex for find that quote.
I just need to stop smoking.... period... but I think I will after 2 years on the diet. so I have 11 more months left to quit.
I should be getting the results back of my 96 food, herbs, and spice panel that would show any IgE, IgA reactions.

Andrew,
I was still adding to my previous post, when you posted, so you may want to re-read it again to see what I added.
Drugs based on 5-aminosalicylic acid, (5-ASA), have been used to treat chronic IBDs for many years. They include Asacol, Mesasal (Salofalk, Claversal), and Pentasa. For many patients, they are effective, while others require various other treatments.
Anyway, that's why stopping smoking can make MC symptoms suddenly appear.
