So. Beach

Post by Lucy »

Anyone ever heard of anyone having new onset of D on So. Beach diet?
Friend of mine had just started that diet (first two weeks you can only have carbs from veggies, I think). This friend started having D before the end of the first week. A doc told me that this was because it's got too much meat on it, but that if one would just cut down on the amount of meat, it'd actually be pretty good.
Sooo..after the initial two weeks, they letcha introduce some whole grain stuff for your carbs.

Incidentally, this same friend said that she'd been lerking in on a board for users of that diet, and found that someone had actually suggested to someone that she might want to have herself checked for celiac disease, but with my friend's experience, I'd say it could STILL be the amount of meat, even if it didn't start until AFTER the two week carb prohibition. Perhaps I need to read some of those posts, just for fun.

By the way, my sister thought that the recipe book for So. Beach might actually be a good place to get ideas for things some of us might be able to eat. I'm going to wait until it comes out in paperback like the first book. Meanwhile, my cookbooks are stacking up around here! Ha!

Yours, Luce

Hi Luce. I've been on and off many "diets" over the years. But in the long term - and this is a conclusion I reached over 10 years ago - I truly believe the best way is to eat a balanced diet, keep a general count of your calories and exercise (brisk walks 3 times a week are an easy way to satisfy this requirement). Why count calories? Because 3600 = 1 pound. That's a very useful tool. Eg. eliminate 1 sugared cola a day and lose 1 pound in 18 days. But I digress.

Now to South Beach and your friend. IMHO by eliminating most carbs, one also is eliminating essential soluble fiber that helps to maintain regularity. Soluble fiber has been proven to help both diarrhea and constipation by forming a gel that absorbs excess water in the colon, adds bulk and slows the passage. Good sources of this kind of fiber include potatoes, white rice, white bread, pasta and veggies such as winter squash, carrots, beets and rutabagas.

So, in conclusion, I don't think it's the protein that's causing your friend's diarrhea. I think it's the sudden withdrawal of most carbs and therefore fiber.

Love,
Carrie

Carrie, I couldn't agree with you more. A balanced sensible diet is all I need. WATCH THOSE PORTIONS!! I'm sorry to say so, but I think that most of the "diets" out there are really fads desgined to make somebody some money.

The only exception is the GF diet and other more restrictive diets for those who are Gluten Intolerant. Or allergic to something. Like my NO CRAB diet.

Just my 2 cents.

Love,

Sally

I have the So. Beach diet book and cookbook. And there are a few receipes in there that are good for people following the GF diet.

Never followed the diet. I feel the same way as just get some exercise and eat healthy for you. I lost over 60 pounds a few years back with doing just that. Then MC kicked in and I've gained about 30 pounds of it back. I need to keep moving to keep my weight down. My goal now is just to feel healthy once again not so much about worry about weight loss.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Ok, I haven't done South Beach, but I did do Atkins. I found that near the end of the first week I had the same symptoms bad D, low energy, etc. But after the first week I started having more energy and feeling great. I think the main reason for this is your body is getting used to not having to use carbs for fuel and is going through a "withdrawal" to carbs. Once it learns to use fat as fuel they will feel better.

As far as being a well rounded diet, in the first "Induction" part I agree it's not a well balanced diet. But having read and understood the book, it will eventually lead to a better well balanced diet down the road, that is if they follow the book.

Having said this, I won't be doing Atkins again, though I do eat fewer carbs than the "normal" diet most people are used to. I eat around 33%+ as carbs. Pretty Isocaloric, so 33% cals as fat, 33% cals as protein and 33% cals as carbs, though my carbs are a little bit higher thand 33% so the other two are lower.

I also eat about 10-20% below maintainence calories to lose weight when I do.
