Had a bit of a scare today!

Post by Umber »

I haven't felt very well all week. I chalked it up to thyroid issues. I got up this morning really sick to my stomach. Anyway, was drying my hair, my left arm tingled, went numb and flopped down to my side. I couldn't lift or move it. Almost like it wasn't attached to my body. Then I felt dizzy and almost fainted. I sat down for a few mins, still a little dizzy but went on to work.

My legs are so weak I barely make it up the stairs and am really out of breath. I am sitting at my desk and the vision in my left eye was bit fuzzy, I couldn't concentrate or focus on anything. Felt a little confused and still slightly dizzy. At this point I am thinking I have had a minor stroke. Those are the symptoms right? So I call my doc he tells me to come in right away. Get there and sit in the waiting room for 45 mins...grrr!

I had a MC flare this week and my cardiologist gave me a water pill (HTZ) for high blood pressure. These two things depleted the potassium in my system. I ususally research new prescriptions but this time I didn't. The doc just said if I have any leg cramps to come back for a potassium test. I didn't experience any leg cramps what so ever.

I went to the store got some banana's ate a couple and feel much better. Go figure.....Our bodies are so amazing.....I didn't get the clues during the week so got a little scare to let me know something was wrong. When I looked on line I had several symptoms of low potassium. I had no idea this could happen.

I am still waiting for my echocardiogram results! Hope to know more this week.

Thanks for listening.....my hubby was sure upset that I didn't tell him what happened this a.m.

Hugs

Lori

Wow, that was very scary. Glad you're okay now. Lucky it wasn't a stroke because you sure took your time seeking medical attention! What are they--the three symptoms of a stroke? You can't say a sentence, you can't smile and....I can't remember the third one. Oh, you can't lift both arms above your head. I think....

Anyway, keep eating those bananas if you keep taking the water pill!

Hi Lori,

I'm certainly glad it wasn't a stroke, because you have approximately two hours after the onset, to get to a hospital set up to handle stroke victims, (not all small hospitals are), if you want to prevent any permanent damage. Potassium deficiency is bad enough, in itself - you must have had a really bad deficiency, for the symptoms to be that severe. And, I have to agree with your hubby, you certainly should have told him about it.

In your defense though, hindsight is always 20-20, and I realize that it's almost impossible to think clearly enough in a situation like that to make rational decisions. I've been there, and the confusion pretty much dominates your thinking.

Glad you're OK now,
Tex

Glad you are starting to feel better. And I know you are a trooper. But please tell your hubby and/or coworkers if something like this happens again!

In your defense, my dad got up (about a year ago now), and passed out on his way to the bathroom. Woke up as he hit the corner of the door jamb with his forhead! My Mom even knew about it and still let him drive to work (at the hospital) where he checked in to the ER. No sign of a reason for what he experienced, but everyone at work gave him and my mom and hard time for letting him drive after that episode!

Continue to feel better.

Oh my Lori!

How scary!! I'm glad you got it figured out, and it is easily fixable!

Are you out of sick time? I can't believe you tried to go to work feeling so poorly!

Rest up - and yes, tell your hubby next time!!
