Japenese Beetles
Are you having trouble with them in your areas???
They are very heavy here in Ohio.. I haven't ever seen them like this before. I did find out that they like zinnias and have had to spray them twice. I came in yesterday evening after watering my flowers and veggies since we haven't had any rain for a long time and I felt something in the front of my shirt. Yep! It was a beetle!! Glad that nobody was here to see me do the bug dance!!
Another criitter that seems to have taken over is the chipmunks.. More this year than I've ever seen too. They sure are destructive!
I haven't seen any honey bees at all. That's very odd. Lots of bumble bees, if those are the small, black and yellow hairy looking things. They are everywhere and another oddity.
The bug activity has really changed this summer.

Hmmmm, a long time ago we had severe beetle infestations (in Pa) but haven't been bothered with them so much since although they are still there, of course. I can just see you doing that bug dance. Probably looks a lot like mine.
My hubby says he is overrun with chipmonks this year though. I blamed it on not having any cats around anymore. They sure do keep the population down when they are around.
There are 2 or 3 people who live near us in Pa. who are keeping honey bees so they are plentiful right now but they had pretty much disappeared for a few years.
One thing in Pa that I really HATE is those tiny little gnats that swarm around your head when it gets warm enough. They could drive a person batty if you had to stay outside all the time with them.
Hope your honey bees come back, Dee. I really feel bad that they have been hurt so badly.
Love, Shirley

Hi Dee,
Certain insects often become serious problems during droughts. Here in Texas, Japanese beetles are a major problem during dry spells, as are a lot of plant-eating worms/caterpillars, but I haven't noticed any this year, (of course, we've had twice our normal rainfall).
Dunno why the chipmunks are having a heyday - we don't have any of those little critters in these parts.
Bumblebees are roughly an inch long. If the ones you see are significantly smaller than that, they might be digger bees. Digger bees are solitary bees that have coloration similar to bumblebees, in some species, but live in individual "dens" in the ground. They range in size from honeybee size, to bumblebee size.
I see by the weather maps, that rain is moving into parts of Ohio. I hope that some of it makes it to your part of the state.
Love,
Tex

HI Dee,
We are having a bigger outbreak of Japanese Beetles this year as well as June Bugs (very large Beetles) and they will be around for a couple more weeks. I am changing Beetle traps every other day and they are full. Honey Bees are becoming less and less and it is such a shame. The beauty of the season this year is Hummingbird Moths and we have more than ever. They love the Budleia (Butterfly Bush) and their larvae is the Hornworm that every tomato grower hates.
Love, Maggie

Hey - some good news on the honey bees. Our "wild" swarm that has lived in the walls of an old barn for years, and almost completely disappeared last summer, appear to be almost back to a normal population level again.
When I checked on them today, I was surprised to see that there were so many of them flying in and out of the barn. Maybe they will rebound everywhere, in time.
Love,
Wayne
