Interesting info from my nutritionist
I have been trying to gain some weight back but have not been able to even reach 100 lbs. My nutritionist had me do a food diary and she has some suggestions that maybe will help some of you too. She said that even if I am casein intolerant which I won't know for sure for another couple of weeks from Dr. Fine's tests and I do know that I am not lactose intolerant from the H2 breath test, I should be able to tolerate whey. She said it is the other milk protein. I got some at the health food store and picked the only one I could find that didn't have any sugar or sugar substitutes added. It is by Naturade. She told me to add it to Rice milk. I am still eating rice. I tried it in water and it is good in that too. Also she said that butter, cream, and sour cream don't have any casein in it either. It is purely the fat from the milk. Hope this helps someone. I really appreciate all your help here at this site.

Oh Geesh, Pat!
If I remember correctly, I think your nutritionist may be misinformed. (I hate to rain on your parade because I know how much you need to gain weight). I am pretty sure that butter, cream, sour cream, and whey ALL contain casein. The only thing that may be safe is ghee, which is clarified butter often used in Indian cooking. Check out Jean's list of milk products to avoid in the Info on Diet Forum.

Dee,
I am not gaining any weight and finding that I cannot tolerate any vegetables. I am eating only meat, rice, potatoes, and avocados, and eggs. It will still be a couple of weeks before I get my results back from Enterolab. I sure am hoping that I can continue with eggs. I get so tired of meat. I am just trying to be thankful for what I can eat. Thanks for the info Dee. Thanks for checking on me. This whole thing is so bizarre!

Hi Pat,
Have you ever added up the number of calories that you're taking in each day? Maybe you're close, but need to eat just a little more, to put you on the positive side of the balance sheet.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Morning Pat,
I am right there with you and Dee on being able to gain. Weight fluctuates but I am now below my Weight Watcher's goal and the flaring seems to make me drop even more. Also there with you on the veggies. From a vegan that is hard but I really cannot tolerate most veggies anymore cause they just get me running to the loo. There has to be a solution and believe me, I am really looking for it. Will let you and Dee know as soon as I find it.

Thanks Maggie, looks like we're in this together. Hang in there!
Tex, yes, I have added up my calories. I submitted a two day food diary to my nutritionist and she said I was consuming 2500 calories. She suggested increasing it to 3000 calories/day. Sure sounds like a lot for not being able to gain weight. I would think a 100 lb. person dripping wet would gain on 2500 a day. Any suggestions?

Yep, you should definitely be gaining weight, unless you're burning an above normal amount of calories. You probably have a pretty significant fat malabsorption problem that's preventing you from utilizing a lot of the calories in your food. I really don't know what to suggest.
When I was at my lowest, it took me a while to begin to gain my weight back, too, but I always ate as much as I could, and after a few weeks, I slowly began to gain, and the more I gained, the easier it became.
I hope you can start gaining your weight back soon. It's frustrating how some people can't gain weight, and some can't lose it. <sigh>

Well, I for one am unable to loose. Actually, I'm starting to whittle off the pounds I gained during my hysterectomy, but unfortnately the distribution is still all screwed up so I have a pudgy belly so even though I weigh a bit less than I did prior to the hysterectomy, I'm still 2 sizes bigger than I was.
Anywho. Enough about me. Forgive me Pat if you've already mentioned this, but have you been checked for overactive thyroid? Or diabetes, or other illnesses other than the gut issue that might be contributing to the weight loss? Seems like good things to rule out so you know that addressing the gut issue will resulting in healing that will eventually help you out. It takes time, but I'm sure you'll get there.
