Folic Acid & B-12

Post by Dee »

I've read where some on the board are supplementing with these two.
What is the RDA for those?? Or how much do you take??
I really think they would be beneficial to me.
Thank You!

Dee,

RDA for B-12 is only around 6 mcg. Folic acid has an RDA of 400 mcg. However, it must be almost impossible to get too much B-12, because most supplements for B-12 contain either 1000 or 5000 mcg of B-12, which are 16,667% and 83,333%, respectively, of the RDA. Apparently the body can store B-12 for long periods of time.

I take 400 mcg of folic acid, and 25 mcg of B-12, in a daily multivitamin, and once in a while, (maybe once every couple of weeks, or whenever I think about it), I'll take a sublingual lozenge, which contains 1000 mcg of B-12, and 400 mcg of folic acid, just for good measure.

Love,
Tex

Hi Dee,

I am one of the lucky ones taking both.

Because of my nil reading for folic acid I am taking 800 mg per day and also taking 500 mg of B12 because my gastro thought that would be the best combination at this point in time.

Probably will get blood tests again this month for a folic acid reading to see if it is elevating for me.

Love, Maggie

Well, various brands have various inert ingredients, and yes, you do have to read the label, and be careful. If you're looking for a multivitamin, for example, you may have to go with the Freeda vitamins. One of the safest drug-store variety multivitamins, is Theragran-M, (now owned by Walgreen's Pharmacy), which contains 100% of the RDA of Folate, (400 mcg), and 200% if the RDA if B-12, (12 mcg). The only questionable ingredient I see on the label is ascorbic acid, which, as you probably know, is otherwise known as vitamin C, and may be made from corn.

Centrum Silver is a similar product, with slightly higher amounts of some vitamins, (it contains twice as much vitamin B-12, for example), but it lists "starch" on the label, which is almost certainly made from corn.

Actually, though, many of us don't respond to standard forms of B-12 supplements, and require sublingual forms, (to be placed under the tongue, and disolved directly into the blood stream). The brand I use is "Solaray", and it contains 1000 mcg of B-12, (16,667% of the RDA), and 400 mcg of folic acid. The only hitch on this label is sorbitol, which is a problem for some people, but it doesn't contain any of the allergens you listed.

Love,
Tex

Hi Dee,

I use Vitamin Shoppe brand exclusively for all of my needs since their brand has no: yeast, corn, wheat, sugar, salt, soy, dairy, citrus, fish perservatives, artificial color or flavors. Pretty much make it safe for me. They use rice flour as an additive if needed.
