Question for Tex

Post by starfire »

I received a notice in my e-mail today that I had a new message here but when I arrived there wasn't one.

Don't know what happened. Don't know if there really was a message or not.

Don't feel like you have to waste a lot of time on this, just thought you might want to know.

I also received a duplicate message from July 12th. Hmmmmm?

Shirley,

That is kind of weird, but I can think of at least one explanation. The e-mail notification is sent as soon as a PM is submitted. However, until the recipient actually opens the PM, the author can edit and/or delete it, if she or he chooses to do so. It's possible that whoever sent it, changed her/his mind, and deleted it.

Several times in the past, I've navigated to a forum to read a new post, only to find out when I got there, that the post did not exist. The first time that happened, I thought I was imagining things, or the system was playing tricks on me, but then I found out later that the post had been deleted by the author. LOL.

Mars,

Hmmmmmm. Now that is a head-scratcher. If they were both sent at the same time, maybe someone just accidentally sent it twice, but if you mean that you received a duplicate a month later, then I don't have a clue, as to what happened.

Tex

Hi Polly,

My best guess would be that your e-mail service provider experienced a server problem, and had to restore a hard drive on the server, from a backup. When the backup was restored, so were the emails. I've had that happen to me several times in the past, due to server crashes caused by severe weather, or viruses, that necessitated restoration of the data, at my local ISP. The reason why I know that to be a likely explanation, is because one of the times when that happened, the board was also down, (because of power outages), and when I called the techies at my ISP about it, they explained what was happening.

Love,
Tex

Hmmmmm....This one says "Wed, 15 Aug 2007 15:47:45 -0500" so maybe someone did delete one. Who knows.

I'm beginning to wonder if some of these could be caused by a spambot trying to send PMs, but the system won't allow it. Spambots are a constant irritation. Rarely does a day go by that I don't have to delete at least a half dozen membership registrations by spambots. They never stop trying.

The last PM I got was August 3 and I have not received another one after that day, so it seems I have not received messages from spambots... At least yet.
