tomato weirdness

Post by Jael »

Glad to stumble upon this site. You folks seem to know more about food intolerances/allergies than any other forum I've yet seen. Had never heard of m. colitis before as well. I don't visit M.D.s nor have I a definitive diagnosis but just wanted to pass this strange little story about my tomato experiences just in the off-chance that this will ring a bell for someone else.

A long story made short: About 20 yrs. back my diet as a student wasn't the best, so resorted to lots of cheap baked bean tins, bought tons of pasta and pasta sauce. In short, a diet filled with concentrated tomato sauce (albeit cooked). Over time, the skin in my mouth and "the other end" disappeared. My stools looked like a grease spot and smelled worse. Further, started having markedly increased, horrendously vivid hypnapompic hallucinations (sorry for the technical stuff...these are hallucinations that occur on waking from a sound sleep. In essence, REM dreams while awake. Not a pleasant experience). Anyway, I consulted a doc who basically was clueless and thought I must be nuts. Be that as it may, I started experimenting with food elimination and wha-lah, after dropping all tomato products for one week, tested my theorem and indulged in a bowl of pasta heavy on the tomato sauce. Within 15 min. of ingesting it, I had a very unpleasant sensation known as "a feeling of doom" i.e. thought I would die. It passed after a few minutes and I felt unwell for a few hours. Well, I got my answer...my body is NOT fond of tomatoes, particularly concentrated sauces such as barbeque sauce and pasta sauces. Fresh tomatoes however...no problem. I stopped all tomato products for almost 3 yrs. (not easy to do). My skin returned to normal within a few months, the bowels returned to normal and the hallucinations all but stopped. I gradually reintroduced some tomato products with no problems.

Ok...jumping to "today" at age 47 vs. 27, I started having GI problems with bloating, trouble getting in a full breath, nervousness and some incredible weirdness that made me think I was losing my mind.

Here's the Scenario:
Going along happily at home or work, then *suddenly* my sense of smell increases very sharply, my hearing is muffled and all this followed immediately by a sensation that my stomach and bowels have been jolted like what you all have experienced when an elevator drops. Then, light-headedness, knee-weakness and that "sensation of doom". It only lasts a few seconds but happens several times a day. Very nerve-wracking and destroys concentration. Makes the hair stand up on my neck. And get this...when the smell hallucination starts, and if someone is speaking, I can "foretell" exactly what will come out of their mouth before they say it (I'm a scientific sort so this has me totally weirded out).

Well guess what. It's the tomato again. I'd forgotten (ok, how dumb) about the episodes 20 yrs. earlier and had been bringing in pasta tins rich with tomato paste to work for months. So basically I was eating this stuff 5 to 6 days per week. I've since recognized the problem and stopped ALL tomato (and potato) for good this time. Hopefully, this will take care of it.

I am most surprised however that this food effected me neurologically. Anyone else ever have any weirdness like this before?? I can't consult an M.D. because they'd think I'm just nuts and after all I can "cure" this myself (thankfully). Sorry to make this so long...just really no one else out there who can vaguely understand this. Any insights or experiences from the neurologic side would be great.

Hi Jael,

and welcome to our discussion board.

I'm going to move your post to the main discussion forum, (the Main Message Board), so that more members will see it. It's easy to overlook a post in this forum, since it is not often posted to.

You have a very interesting relationship with tomatoes. Some members here do have problems with tomatoes, though not necessarily in the way they affect you. I'm curious to see if anyone else has had any similar experiences.

Wow, that is really extreme!! I don't know what to make of it all but perhaps some others will have some ideas/opinions.

Welcome to the board.

Thanks Shirley,

Know my "case" is bizarre so I don't expect much input, but
it's nice to get it off my chest so to speak. Don't know if any
docs browse through this forum either and if any have heard
of this.

Glad you've got control of your symptoms! I have a friend who gets a form of eczema on the palms of her hands and soles of her feet if she eats too many tomatoes. Prior to reading your post, that's the only strange reaction I'd heard of.

Jael,

Actually, a couple of our members are MDs, (they have MC), though only one is still active on the board, but I've occasionally noticed that a few of the "guests" browsing this site have IP addresses from various medical centers, hospitals, and university medical research facilities, so maybe someone will notice your post, and take an interest in it. One never knows who is reading articles, on the internet.

I don't call it wierd...I grew up with a phsyic mother and she passed alot down to us kids all different ways. So when things happen to me 3/4 of the time they are related to those things passed down. I often experience smell sensations but I don't think they are linked to any certain food, but I could be wrong. you have me intriqued and I may do a study of that on me. My brother has different sensations than my sister and I do....and there are different abilities that were passed down. When ever I have a smell sensation I try figure out what I did that day to bring it on, But I also find the more I meditate, I just accept it. I don't have the ear muffling all the time, only once or twice a month. I get dizzy but I think it has to do with healt or something in my ear, but heck who knows? I sometimes can tell when the phone will ring but ususally cannot tell what people are going to say, sometimes between waking and sleeping I will have a premination of thing that are going to happen, that to me is a bit scarey, because they happen, but not as scarey as the feelings I get sometimes from touching someone new such as a handshake. Hope it all works out Maybe you need to do a food study. Oma

Thanks for the comments from all and for your concern.
I've behaved and cut out all nightshades from the diet (not easy but doable). My olfactory hallucinations/panic/weird sensations have increased unfortunately, so don't think this is diet related. Had really hoped it was, since that's pretty simple to fix.

Am probably going to break down and get an M.D. to order some thyroid tests, an EEG and maybe an MRI (brain) to rule out temporal lobe epilepsy, panic disorder (I admit it, am a neurotic individual with a rather stressful job) or possibly to catch changes in the brain geography. A few months back DID have a minor stroke due to an inherited disorder of the vessels (hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectases). This was a total surprise since I'm in very good shape and fairly young (47) and I had no residual damage (supposedly). I'm getting very worn down by these crazy daily episodes though so do need some answers soon. Will keep all posted when I get some answers. Thanks again folks!

Tomatoes

I am very sensitive to tomatoes in any form, tho not getting any of your unusual symptoms. I've thought the problem is the high acid content of tomatoes, but you,ve got me wondering now!
Good luck

I'll add myself to this list of intolerance for nightshade plants. Haven't attempted fresh tomatoes but I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for the heads up

9 years ago we didn't know any better. But now we would recognize these neurological symptoms as associated with chronic magnesium deficiency.

Been there, done that. I had a couple of TIAs 6 and 7 years ago that I'm pretty sure were a result of accumulated neurological damage due to years of untreated gluten sensitivity (prior to 2002) and a chronic magnesium deficiency.
