Holes all over the place GRRRRRR!!!

Post by annie oakley »

Ok here's what's going on...ya'll will think Oma has lost the last brain cell she has. There is this prarie dog (ground squirrel w/no tail to me) that is diggin holes everywhere. I think he is making a tunnel system.. :yikes: We have filled in the hole, added bleach and water before filling the holes and have done all manner of things to his/her holes. :devilangel: It's like the scene in Kevin Costnes movie "Dragonfly" when he puts his dead wifes things away, the light bulb blows, he leaves the room to get another and when he returns all the things he packed are back where they were. Same thing with the holes. He/she digs them out in minutes. Can't catch the little :weirdnana: . So Mike has sat out there while he has bird hunted (he hunts close up as we have quail and dove up close here) with a shot gun. His latest hole is in my line of sight fron the kitchen window and about 10 ft just outside the dogs fence. I have a full box of shells and a 20 ga. I am fixin to trap the little sweetie and SHOOT him! He is going to meet all the other critters in critter heaven. He declared war when he brought all his holes up close. It's going to be :Itchscratch: and then another :Itchscratch: and hopefully I can get him. Soooooo If anyone has any Ideas Pls feel free to help here. Love Oma

Okay Oma, Now you'll think that I"m not playing with a full deck here, but my little invention worked ..
Ground squirrels are very similiar to chipmunks and their habits and habitats are very much the same.. These critters love to eat constantly..
Soooooo, I filled a 5 gallon bucket only halfway full of water. I called that the critters swimming pool!!! Next, I went and bought a bag of sunflower seeds and sprinkled them on top of the water in the bucket. They will float!!
Now comes the diving board!!!! We have railroad ties around our pole building so I took a 2x4 and laid it on the edge of one of the ties and the other end out over the lip of the bucket, but just enough for the criitters to spot the floating sunflower seeds. They will dive in after the seeds and can't get out!!! I had holes everywhere and they were eating all of my veggie plants and ripping my flowers out so I got really PO'D...
People think, Oh! How cute they are, but they can cause ALOT of destruction..
I'll tell ya, my critter swimming pool worked better than the neighbors $30 traps..... Haven't seen any since after rounding up 4 of them..

Oma,

Those pesky varments....your plan sounds plausible and at least good practice for deer hunting. If that doesn't work out you may need a RODENATOR PRO!

Your so funny, so is this site.

Hee Heee...not at your situation, but it reminds me of our July trip to Milwaukee. We were at the County zoo and they have a prairie dog exhibit. First thing Erin (age 7) says is "they have Whack-a-Moles"!

Good luck. I don't like any varmit that cause damage to lawns and gardens.

You will all think I am the one not playing with a full deck here! LOL!

I garden to attract wildlife. I have dozens of chipmunk hole amongst my flowers and throughout the property. One of my favorite chipmunks is a little guy who has a two-inch white tip on his tail (I have seen no others are like him) who has been around for the past 2 years. He sits in a spot outside the downstairs sliding door every morning and chitters away until I bring him sunflower seeds. He lets me get pretty close now - I think he will be eating out of my hand soon.

I think if I ever had a critter that I just couldn't live with, I'd get a trap and relocate him. Of course, I don't mean to be judgemental of those who kill animals (after all, y'all know that I am on the caveman diet so I do eat meat!).

Love,

Polly

I didn't know chipmunks dug holes! Everywhere I've lived with chipmunks there have been tons of stone walls so that is where they sheltered.

I can't get attached to those guys though. Tigger is the mighty hunter and keeps the population in check. Although we have quite the run of mole hills this year and cats don't eat moles (make them sick to their stomachs). I'm hoping they aren't voles as voles have wiped out my mom's spring bulb collection (tulips, daffodils, etc.). I've got lots of nice early spring color and hope it will still be there next year too! Plus I just ordered $75 worth of tulips for "Geoff's" garden (and who do you think will end up planting said tulips?).

Polly....I must say I don't like to kill critters at all, but he is reaking havac on the property. We are looking into a trap. If it is affordable we may trap him and relocate. We were talking about that very thing this afternoon on the way home from work. He is driving Buck nuts as well.

Dee ....I also Like your Idea as well, I never laughed so hard...but it does sound do-able also. :hammerhead: Love Oma

I just figure it is very sweet to trap them and relocate, but that would just let them cause destruction for someone else.
Just hope that nobody gets any of them in their homes. They will eat thru drwall, insulation, everything in cupboards that they can rip into, etc....
They even dig down under the foundations of homes.
