to specifically identify them? Or did he select clindamycin simply because it is effective on many types of anaerobic bacteria? The reason I ask is because Flagyl, for example, is also effective against certain anaerobic bacteria, and not only does it not cause C-diff, but it is the first line of treatment for a C-diff infection. It does not control all types of anaerobic bacteria, however, (I don't believe that any single antibiotic will do that), so he may have had what he believed to be a very good reason for selecting clindamycin, (if he based his choice on the results of a culture test).
For all I know, clindamycin may be the only antibiotic proven to be effective against the bacteria causing the abscess in Jack's lung. Unless that is the case, however, in view of the well-known risk of treatments with clindamycin resulting in pseudomembranous colitis, (C-diff), I would have to say that if I were a doctor, I would have a very difficult time convincing myself to prescribe that drug in virtually any situation, especially for a patient with a history of problems with recurring infections.
I hope the doctor is making progress on the stool culture test. The hours required for a test like that seem like an eternity, when you're sick, and desperately in need of relief.

Dee - Did Jack's Doctor Do A Culture Of The Bacteria,
It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
very
Yes they did do a culture and that was what made Jack's pulmonary doctor go with the Clindmycin ..
I see that you have been doing some research, as I have been doing since last Sunday..
I'm still hoping the stool sample will not show c-diff because Jack is not having any cramping and is not passing any blood! I'm leaning towards Jack having not much of an appetite and eating very small meals and his weakend immune system at this point. Basically, lots of liquids..
We'll get a call Monday morning on the results of the stool test..
I will have to say that I am really impressed with this doctor because so far he has not been one to HIM-HAW around.. He gets on things right away!
Love

This is what made my evil twin surface while Jack was in the hospital.
In the bed next to Jack's was a 94 year old fella that was admitted with sepsis. The infection eventually ended up in the poor fellas spine so he, of course, was not allowed out of bed and had alot of severe pain.
So, he kept saying that he had to get up and use the bathroom because he felt a bowel movement coming on. His daughter had to keep telling him just to go and someone would clean him and it up.. I felt so bad for him because he was embarrassed by the thought of going in the bed.
So, he relieved himself and a nurses aid came in and cleaned him up and took the chux pad from under him, feces side out, and proceeded to walk with it in front of Jack's bed, where I was sitting, to the bathroom, which was at the foot of Jack's bed..
I went into a blonde bomber fit with this person. I told her no way was she going to dispose of that in the trash can, in the same bathroom that Jack had to use.. She laughed at me!! Wrong move!! I wanted to put her head in the toilet and .. First, I told her to remove it immediately and I wanted someone to completely clean that bathroom.
Next, I got her name, so yes, I will report her .
The nurse came in and I threw some very legitmate concerns at her of which she agreed with me. She even made sure that the mess had been taken care of.
I always thought that they had plastic bag type things at each patients areas for that type of situation, so that it could be removed and disposed of out of the rooms...
Here's poor Jack having no appetite to begin with and this dimwit definitely wasn't following proper procedures!!
I'll tell ya, you have to really be on your toes and have your eagle eyes checking out everything nowadays...

Okay, that eliminates my concerns. Obviously that doctor takes his responsibilities very seriously.
There seem to be very wide differences in attitudes among various hospital personnel. Some take their work very seriously, and will go out of their way to help a patient in any way they can, while those at the other extreme just go through the paces, doing as little as they can. I guess that's not surprising, since every industry has pretty much the same problem.
I probably would have done the same thing you did, if I had been in that situation. There's no excuse for that kind of behavior, especially in a hospital.
