Hi Barbara,

Just curious - is your TSH result inside what your lab considers to be the "normal" range, if you don't mind saying?

The reason I ask is because my doctor's lab uses the old obsolete range, (0.465 to 4.68), and before I started taking a thyroid supplement, my result fell within that range, but it fell outside the newer "normal" range proposed by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, several years ago, namely, (0.25 to 2.5). I finally convinced my doctor to test free T4, though, and since it was low, he agreed to prescribe a supplement. I've got a heck of a lot more energy, now. My thyroid problem is the opposite of yours, though - mine is under active.

Mrs. Columbo,

Yep, if your TSH level was 0.29, two hears ago, then either someone overlooked that number, or someone made a bad decision to not follow up on it. It's surprising how doctors sometimes have tests done, and then they either ignore the results, misinterpret them, or forget to follow up. <sigh>

I hope dinner was good.

TSH .5 - 1.50

Free T4 .6 - 1.1

Free T3 .87 - 1.78

Lori,

That's very interesting. Based on those ranges, my TSH is still too high.

Is that what your doc uses to diagnose patients, or are those the ranges that he aims for when treating patients with hyperthyroidism?

Thanks,
Tex

I believe he uses those specific ranges to diagnose & treat hypothyroidsm. I will ask him next time I go in. He has tweaked the ranges slightly from the time I was diagnosed a few years ago but they have pretty much stayed the same.

His treatment suppresses the TSH. I don't understand the purpose for that however, while he does do the TSH test he really doesn't use the results unless there is a drastic change in the levels. We rarely talk about TSH in fact he tells me he is more interested in the free T's in the blood, that is where the action is.

I rarely question his treatments and tactics anymore. I am sure I drove him nutso at first. He has totally taken me in the right direction. Its been a long road but I feel better than I have in years. Within the last 9 months have lost 30 lbs & finally have enough energy to exercise. He tried to get financing to open up his practice. He couldn't get any due to his idea of how to treat hormones was so different no one would take the chance. He used all of his retirement to open his office. His seminars and word of mouth have him so busy its difficult for new patients to get appointments. I wish there were more docs like him.

hugs

I don't see a thing wrong with his methods - he obviously knows what he's doing, and your excellent results prove that. I also wish there were more docs like him - in particular, I wish there were at least one in my part of the country. <sigh>

Thanks for all the information.

Hugs,
Tex

P S To clarify the situation, Barbara has hyperthyroidism, and I have hypothyroidism.
