Well, I just went through a small bowel follow through and had the tests done for the cecliac antibodies and got the results. My doctor has told me he cannot medically diagnose me with any sort of gluten allergy. I have offically be gluten free for 3 weeks and also stopped my Asacol. I have had no symptoms for 3 weeks. I am thrilled with that. My doctor said if the gluten free diet works then stick to it. He also agreed that I didn't need the Asacol if I waasn't having symptoms (something I have never been able to get him to admit). He told me he doesn't see a need for me to come back unless I have more problems.
I think this just basically supports that the ulcerative colitis could be the cause of the gluten sensitivity. I can't afford to go through all of the testing that Dr. Fine has but I know what works and am finally ready to make the lifestyle change to GF. I love reading other people's experiences. It is nice to know I'm not alone. None of my friend's really understand what it is like to have to rush to the bathroom constantly.

It sounds like you've got the situation pretty well under control. It's great that you are able to control the symptoms by diet alone. I have to give your doctor credit for supporting the GF diet, even though he couldn't diagnose celiac disease. There are still many docs out there who will argue that if you test negative for celiac disease, you can't be gluten sensitive. (Shame on them).
Many of us here figured out our food intolerances by trial and error, rather than by taking the stool tests, (or any other tests, for that matter), so you are in good company. Is your energy level improving now that you are feeling better? Maybe those extra pounds will slowly melt away, now that you have your life back.
I hope the diet continues to work for you, and your symptoms never return. Please keep us posted, because member feedback is the best source of information that we have.

jen,
That is great that you are having results! My GI doc says that I don't have Celiac, but that I could have gluten intolerance. He says that if I have results from the diet then maybe I have gluten intolerance. The only results I have had is the smell has improved. I still have the D. His PA said that 50% of those with MC have gluten intolerance.

It does seeem as though my energy has increased. My doctor still believes all of the D is from the MC and has nothing to do with the gluten but he at least agreed that if it worked I should continue. Pat I hope your D improves. How long have you been on the GF diet? I know it was instant for me but a lot of people have said it takes a long time for it to completely work.
