off topic- our puppy is dying

Post by thedell19 »

It seems that our 11 month old puppy is coming to the end of his short life. He had a bone infection about 3 months ago that finally started to clear up with heavy duty antibiotics. Then he got a sinus ifnection and ear infection. Gave him more antibiotics. Then yesterday he had some blood in his urine. Took him to the vets ran tests- red blood cell count is low, calcium is high, but kidney values were normal.

It would be great to keep him in your thoughts and prayers even though he is a dog, but he is our child.

Oh man I'm so sorry. Our dog has had many issues, a lot related to food issues that we cleared up. But he still gets nasty infections every once in a while. He was very sick at one point that we thought we would lose him. So I know how hard this can be.

We just lost our cat a week ago due to liver issues, she was so far gone that we had to put her down. It was a lot harder on me than I thought it would be.

You are most certainly in my prayers.

We feed him Royal Canin Skin Support.

Mainly digestive and skin problems. Throwing up, not formed stools, itchy, low energy. Hmmm... sounds familar. LOL At one point it got so bad he started limping and not moving much but it was probably all the damn meds one vet had him on. I treated him on my own by cutting all his meds and putting him on a better food. They had him on 2 anti histamine type drugs, an antibiotic, prednesone. Blah!

Andrew,

I'm so sorry to hear such sad news. It sounds as though the vets are dropping the ball somewhere, not just with your dog, but in a lot of cases. Maybe they're prescribing too many high-powered drugs, or the dosage is too high, or maybe they're promoting the wrong types of diets. I'm reminded of how Polly restored her dog's health, (by cutting out commercial dog foods).

You know, a heck of a lot of pets are having serious health issues these days. It almost seems that the harder we try to keep them in top health, the more problems they have, and the more serious the problems become. I can remember back when I was a kid, if there were any commercial dog feeding products on the market, we weren't even aware of them. Our dogs never saw a vet's office. ( Back then, city people took their dogs to the vets for rabies shots, but that's about all, and we took care of that little detail ourselves, since we were so used to vaccinating cattle, sheep, hogs, etc. Our dogs, (and we always had dogs, on the farm), ate rabbits, and anything else they could catch, (preferably not including chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc., or any other farm livestock), and we sometimes went hunting, and brought back rabbits for them. Other than that, they ate meat scraps when we butchered livestock, (which was fairly often, especially in the winter), bones, and table scraps. If nothing else was available, (which rarely happened), they got mush, (made from cornmeal), once in a while. Looking back, I can't recall that any of them ever had any serious health issues. They lived outdoors, (at all times), and unless they happened to cross a public road at the wrong time, and get run over, they died of old age.

These days, it seems that everywhere you look, dogs and cats are having increasingly serious health issues. Maybe this should be a wakeup call for us. Dogs, for example, cycle through generations about seven times as fast as humans. Most of their lineage have only been eating commercially processed rations, (exclusively), for roughly 40 or 50 years or so, IOW, about four or five generations. For humans, the really big push in commercially processed foods, (where the ingredient lists began to become as long as your arm), began about the same time, more or less. This is less than two generations for us, though. The really "outrageous" ingredient lists have only been in widespread use for less than a generation, I believe, (it really accelerated in the 1980s). Perhaps in another three or four generations, roughly 100 to 120 years, our species will be experiencing the rapidly escalating health decline that our pets are experiencing today, due to our increasing use of powerful prescription drugs, and "over-processed" foods. I hope not, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Andrew. My son's family's cat died a while back--about the time of the "melamine in the pet food" event. I'm sure that's what got her because she hadn't been sick for long. She was 12, but in good health. They threw out the food though, so we'll never know. Hope your puppy doesn't suffer. And I think Tex has a good point.

Hi :cowboy:

I agree with you. When I was a kid, our cats and dogs never had the problems that the pets do now. I never heard of pets having cancer and other things like humans get. I also never heard of humans getting as much cancer as they do now. It is very scary and hard to understand, that cancer is common with animals and people now.

I think that that the air supply and the food supply are very responsible for a lot of this.

When I was young, I never had a pet die from anything but old age. It just seems to be epidemic for pets and people. Don't the ones making the decisions to put the junk in the pet food, and people food know, or care. OH wait!!! I know, they don't..... It is a very sad thing to me, I don't understand why money can be more important than people and animals.

I asked my vet about the food they are selling for cats at their office. I was told that it contained remnants of dead animals that they had put to sleep, in the pet food. The vet told me that that was not true, that it was good, healthy food. I don't believe him. I also don't understand how a vet could recommend a food like that.

Maybe I'm nuts, but I don't believe the vet anymore then I believe my docs when they say something to me that I know is not true.

What is happening here??? People and animals are just getting sicker and sicker, don't they care???

I am losing faith in most all docs, and it doesn't make me a happy camper.

Thanks for listening. :pulsinghearts: Kathyp

Andrew,

I feel so bad for you all!!!! I will pray for your baby, and both of you!!!

It is so hard to go through something like this and feel so helpless to do anything.

I really hope they can help him, I wish I could do something to help you!!!

Love, Kathyp

Andrew,
I'm so very sorry about your puppy. I sincerely hope that things get better. I know how very hard it is when your pets are sick. I just went through this myself. Do they have any clue as to why he keeps having these infections?
