What's YOUR Thanksgiving plans?

Post by Mars »

Hi everyone,

I think we did this last year, so here goes again!

I am cooking dinner for Larry's family and Nichole and Jordan. I guess that means FIL, Grandmother-in-law (she's in a nursing home), 2 SIL's and their significant other and their kids. I guess that makes a total of 18 people. One is a newborn baby which won't eat but the rest plan on "pigging out"! LOL

What's your plans?

Love,
Mars

I was just going to begin a new thread about eating turkey for Thanksgiving. I've been invited to my daughter's in-laws for Thanksgiving (hubby has to work). Sunday I decided to cook the turkey I've had in the freezer since b/4 my diagnosis. I made gravy with potato starch, potatoes with rice milk and ghee, sweet potatoes w/ghee, brown sugar and orange juice. Found some yellow pea with spice mixture that was free of all my intolerances and used it for stuffing.

That night, I had D. I figured it was the stuffing. Ate the other leftovers the next day and had more problems. Yesterday I ate a turkey sandwich with rice bread and subsequently made 3 trips to the bathroom. I decided it must have been the turkey. Tonight I decided to search the boards here for turkey and found that the solution injected in turkeys is a problem. I should have known better. I should have checked here first.

I had been planning on bringing my own gravy and potatoes to the Thanksgiving get-together. Should I buy a slice of Boar's Head turkey and bring it? I haven't had any problems with that turkey. I can't have any gravy I guess. Or should I just eat the turkey and spend the evening reacting? What do the rest of you do?

Gloria,

If the Boar's Head Turkey doesn't bother you, I would figure it would be better than being miserable the rest of the day by eating the regular turkey being served! I'm sure your family will understand and this way you will be eating the same food as everyone else (well, sort of).

Good luck and happy eating!

Love,
Mars

   Spending the evening, and/or the next day, in the bathroom, is usually not all that much fun, so I try to do whatever it takes to avoid it. I hate "having to do something different" at meal time, but it beats the heck out of spending all that miserable time in the bathroom. I'd rather be thought of as an ultra-picky eater, than to be thought of as "whatever it is that someone who spends almost the whole time in the bathroom" is considered to be. LOL.

As for my plans on Thanksgiving, I'll probably be spending time with family and friends, but I'll be eating veeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrry carefully.

We'll be going to my parent's house. My grandmother (age 88 or 89, I always forget), aunt, uncle, cousin (age 10), sister, parents, husband, and 2 step-daughters will be there.

Geoff and I reminisce about two years ago when I had my hysterectomy 2 weeks before thanksgiving and he and I just stayed home. He hunted all morning and then came home and cooked a turkey and all the gf fixings for me. It was quiet and very enjoyable. My side of the family isn't too bad, and as for intolerances, we've got them...me gluten, mom fruit, and my aunt sucrose. Since I'm the newest to the list, I get forgotten the most, but I've figured out what to bring. I do a pan of stuffing in the oven separate from the bird, and I think mom is making the pumpkin pies without crust so I can eat them. Sometimes I get a crust mix to her, but have had a hard time finding the glutenfree pantry pie crust mix here and with the new job haven't had much time to go shopping.

Well we are headed to our best friends in Springfield, VA. This time though we are staying at a hotel since there have guests for a month from the UK. We know them so we will all have a great time. Kind of thankful for the hotel since it is only 5 miles away and it gives us our time.

I am taking the pies and other goodies and wine to last the weekend. Will eat very carefully but I am sure Richard will make GF bread for me (his sister is a Celiac) and they are very aware of my diet after all these years.

Happy Turkey Day to all.

Love, Maggie

We (Bill, Mom & Myself) will be going to our daughter's home again this year. She has the most comfortable place for things like that - plus - the kids are "at home" there with all thier "things" to keep them entertained. It's just easier. I bought the turkey for her this year and I imagine I'll be asked to bring my usual pies.

My sister will be arriving Sunday night but on Wed she is planning to rent a car and drive to Pensacola to spend T Day with my son and family. She has been here the last 2 years and she will be here 4 or 5 days this Christmas so I can't comlain, besides, I'm glad she wants to spend time with my son.

I found this website with information about gluten in turkeys:

http://www.glutenfreeforum.com/lofivers ... 26472.html

I know that the turkey I cooked was off-brand. I guess I can look at the solution ingredients in the name-brand ones listed. Though I'm not cooking one for Thanksgiving, I like to buy one now while they're on sale and freeze it.

Hi All,
Every time I plan something for Thanksgiving it goes terribly wrong so I'm not planning anything. I'll cook for myself. If the mood strikes me and nothing bizarre has happened, I'll go over to my sister's. Oh, and I always watch the Lions game on TV and sometimes the Thanksgiving Day Parade (Detroit style).

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

As for me, its "same old, same old"! Heading to the beach to visit MIL - you remember, my critical (and sometimes even nasty) MIL. We go out to eat Thanksgiving dinner because my hubby doesn't trust his mom's cooking. Well.....actually I should say he doesn't trust her refrigerator. It's old, doesn't consistently cool things, and MIL has a habit of keeping food around forever. For example, we're likely to find shrimp in there leftover from when she served it to us during cocktail hour on a summer visit. And I'm not kidding - this has happened! Scott's sister and her DIL both got food poisoning after one of MIL's dinners. So did another DIL on a separate occasion.

So, we'll eat our turkey dinner out and I will just have to ask the waitress a lot of questions and play it by ear. It seems to be getting easier - do you think wait staff seem to be more aware of food problems than they used to be? I find them to be increasingly more acommodating and knowledgeable.

Hope you all have an enjoyable Thanksgiving! :happythanksgiving:

Love,

Polly
