any one who is online - help
ok I'm freaking out here. Yesterday I had an English muffin which broke my gluten free diet. I have doen this a few times and have slightly looser stools the next day but not anything major. Today I have the looser stools but I ma bleeding also. I never bled before even when I didn't stick to a diet so I'm really freaking out. It was bright red blood. I don't know how much I should be freaking out. It was only when I wiped but I wiped like 6 times and it was still spots of red blood. How concerned should i be? Any one with any advice I will take anything right now.
Hi Jen,
Sorry to be so late with this.
If the liquid in the bowl is not bright red, you don't have a medical emergency. Chances are, (especially since it apparently only showed on the paper, (if I read your post correctly), it is only hemorrhoids, (as Mike suggested). If your colon were bleeding, the water in the bowl would be tinted red.
This is quite common with diarrhea, since there are enzymes in the fecal stream which would not normally be present, and they tend to "weaken" and dilate the blood vessels, resulting in bleeding hemorrhoids.
I'm assuming that you have had a recent colonoscopy, which would have allowed your GI doc to note any suspicious polyps or other "suspicious" growths in your colon. Again, though, if your colon were bleeding, the water in the bowl would be red. Any blood from above the colon would normally be black by the time it is passed, due to the effects of partial digestion. Bright red blood originates from bleeding at the distal end, (the bottom end), of the GI tract. The most common cause is hemhorroids, obviously. With diarrhea, when hemorrhoids are present, wiping is a "high risk" activity, since it provides additonial irritation to already sensitive and weakened blood vessels.
I'll bet a GF cookie that most of us here had that problem at one time or another, during major reactions. I know that I sure did. A few times, when I looked in the bowl, it was so red that I wondered if I were losing life-threatening amounts.
If it continues, and/or the water in the bowl begins to look bright red, then I would suggest you check with your doctor, to get his or her professional opinion.
Tex
P S Don't let any doctor talk you into surgery to correct hemorrhoids, either, unless you have an exceptionally bad case, and the problem is very persistent, with serious blood loss. (Hemorrhoid surgery, and the recovery, is very, very painful, according to friends who have been through it). Chances are, the problem will disappear and never return, after you get your D under control, (provided you are careful with your diet). 18 years ago, a doctor told me that I might as well line up a surgical appointment to correct a hemorrhoid problem. I ignored him, and changed my diet, and the problem went away, (except for when my MC symptoms were active). I haven't had a problem since I've achieved remission.

Jen----I have had that happen to me also----related to being constipated and the forcing---so every now and agin I take a stool softener or use a tablespoon of FIBERCON in my coffee---I know everybody says FIBER
but it works for me---- My GP suggested this routine and he knows my issues--All the meds. I am on increase constipation-- --so to avoid *getting it out* I use what I posted above--
YUP---the healing from this type of surgery is painful---I had a friend that went thru that and it wasnt pleasant--
As Tex said---once your diet is under control U should be OK---
This could be a mishap here and there---watch diet and be careful with the continuous wiping---that does irritate ---
U know what I did----I bough those baby wipes---fragance free etc.--some with ALOE and I use them--- they are very KIND to ya bottom~~
Take care----try not to work yourself up---easy to say --I know~~and do talk to your GI or GP about the problem too--

I agree - hemmies!!! When you show bright red blood it indicates fresh not old or from the inside out as they say. I have internal and external hemmies and they bleed ocassionaly with bright red blood.
I agree, if you had a recent colonoscopy, there would have been an indication of "something else" that culd cause bleeding. I wouldn't worry too much unless there are pools in the toilet. A burst hemmie can show blood in the toilet but it should go away within a short period of time.
If the bleeding persists, it is alway a good thing to touch basis with your doc.
Love,
Mars
