Barbara,
Sorry to butt in here, but I just had to mention that I felt the same way as Shirley, about Willie. When I was younger, I thought that he was probably the most untalented C & W singer that I had ever seen or heard - couldn't stand his music. As I got older, though, I began to realize that since he was still around, he must have at least a slight amount of talent.
I notice though, that the older I get, the better he gets. LOL. I'm beginning to discover that he is actually quite talented, (in his own unique way), and his music is no longer totally intolerable. In fact, it's pretty damn good. LOL. He does grow on you. He hangs out not very far from where I live - maybe that's why it took so long for me to learn to appreciate him and his music. What's the old saying about nobody appreciating you in your own home town? LOL.
Luve,
Galahad

He really is unique. He is quite nasal but it works for him. He is one of a kind, for sure, and he is a fantastic songwriter.
I was quite impressed once when I saw him give an interview after the IRS had gotten hold of him. I admired the way he just shrugged his shoulders (at least publicly) and went back on the road so he could pay the money they said he owed. I believed him when he said his business managers took care of all that stuff, but he didn't rant and rave or really blame anyone else. Anyway, I liked the way he handled himself in the interview.
Barbara, I've seen clips of him when he was first starting out back when Nashville tried to present him clean shaven in a suit & tie with orchestra type music. He was right. It didn't "fit" him at all. After all, we already had Eddy Arnold and Jim Reeves. HaHa Willie was smart to do it "His Way".
Well, just an old woman's thinking. HaHa
Love, Shirley
