Deep tongue sores

Post by Mars »

Does anyone have reacurrent tongue crevases (sp?)? I get them quite often - raw and very red. If I stick out my tongue it is awful looking. (I know, don't stick out my tongue!!!!)

Anyhoo, they are very deep and sometimes I have a white film on the back of it. It almost looks like a form of thrush but every doctor I go to for it will look at me and say "mmmmmmmm". I even had one doctor call all of his doctor friends and ask them if they had ever run across this.

I get sores on my tongue and cheeks (inside) They don't have the white film tho. I haven't made any lately....but I usually keep a mouth wash I make out of juniper berries in the house. And it seems to help me sores. That reminds me...I need to make some more. If you want the recipe I will give it to you. Love Oma

Well, I am not Mars, but I would love the recipe for Juniper Berry Mouth Wash. I have lots of juniper bushes and trees around here and I might as well us the berries.

Thanks, Oma,

Yes, I have gotten mouth sores from when I first got sick way back in 96. Well I was getting sick before then, but I didn't actually go off work because of it. The mouth sores sometimes got so bad that they ran down the back of my throat. Other times it was thrush. And sometimes my toungue hurts, and is split on top. Painful to even touch. Then there were times that I got cold sores that spread so quickly that they went all the way around my mouth and then inside. Those times it left scars, all around my mouth, and took forever to heal up. What helped me was using an anti bacterial toothpaste, and or mouth wash. I have not had it that bad in awhile now, but keep some cold sore cream on hand for that, called lipactin. Oh, and yes when I have the mouth sores or toungue sores, I did have a coat of white on them. It does not go away with just brushing, as I brush my toungue too. I have found so many little things happen since I first got sick, that sometimes I do things to counter act them automatically without even thinking about it, or mentioning them to my doctor. I also get sores on my scalp and in my ears and inside my nose. They all hurt allot. And the back of my throat at the sides is always red like a tomatoe, and feels sore. Its all a complete mystery as to why, oh, why, oh why.

Oma - I would like the receipe, thank you. I will have to check and see if we have jumiper berries in my neck of the woods though - I'll have to do some research.

Wendy, the white on my tongue doesn't go away with brushing either and during this time, I absolutely CAN NOT get enough to drink either.

I don't have the problem near as often as I used to but they still come-and-go.

I also have scars from the sores. They are in the crease of my lips, both sides. Looks like I tried to make my mouth bigger - like a clown. No comments needed about this statement! LOL

The only thing the mouth wash did was to ease the burning by coating the sores. I kind of described the feeling to an acidic reaction.

You reminded me too about the thirst. I cannot get enough to drink either, my mouth is so dry. I suck on herbal cough drops, but some kinds I just look at them, and they turn my stomach. I have had them so much that I can taste them, yuck. The one thing I maybe shouldn't have been doing, is maybe sucking on anything that is sweet, because I have wondered at times if it is the over production of yeast.

Tongue sores are an allergic reaction to foods. Emily just had a wopper of
a tongue sore while we were on vacation. She ate a bunch of chocolate.

It is finally healing. Her's are mainly on the sides of her tongue. I had thought the last time she got a tongue sore that it was from soy, but, I bet it was chocholate she didn't tell me about.

Also, tongue and mouth sores can go along with MC, celiac disease/gluten sensitivity, and vitamin deficiency, especially B12 if I remember correctly.

Hi Margie. Ever since my LC began I have had a white film on my tongue! But it isn't painful and I don't have any sores. I've pretty much just been ignoring it, although I did have my PCP, GI and dentist take a look. They didn't think it was candida or anything to worry about. Still it doesn't seem normal to me and I wish it would go away!!!

For years my husband got really terrible mouth sores (canker sores). About ten years ago I read that often they are caused by a vitamin deficiency. He added two vitamins - C and B12 (500 mg/day each) - and has not had the problem since then. Might be worth a try.

Good luck and feel better!

Love, Carrie

Tongue Sores

Post by Momster »

Ouch!!! That must hurt. I don't have MC, but do get sores on my tongue occasionally. Usually on the sides of my tongue and they're not nice. I always found the old fashioned remedy of dissolving a tablespoon of baking soda in water and swishing it in my mouth soothes it. I have had white on my tongue also, but usually if I'm really sick and not taking in enough fluids. Then the good old standby of Gatorade helps.

Hope those Drs. stop saying mmmm and do something constructive. Nice that we can come here and talk about it, isn't it?

Have a lovely Sunday.

Love - Momster :bird1:

Regarding the Juniper Berry Mouth Wash...I think juniper berries smell and taste like gin! Hmmmm, Martini Mouthwash. It could sell!

Kathy,

I was wondering if the mouthwash recipe involved fermentation, LOL!

By the way, gin is made with juniper berries.

FYI

Gin takes greasy tarry stains off your carpet. I know. My father spilled a tray of martinis on some stains on our carpet that Mom had been trying to get out for weeks. When he mopped up the martinis, the stains came out, too!!!!

I wonder if we're onto something here with the mouth sores and MC. Seems a lot of us have them, in one form or another. I've had some that are only the sides of my tongue, and some that seem to pop up after certain foods, (I guess they are intolerances) but then there are the ones that are SO incredibly painful on my gums and the roof of my mouth that all I can do is cry. They throb and pound so deeply, and I've missed work because of them. Can't eat, can't drink, and the pain is just so intense. When they first started a few years ago, my dentist didn't have a clue. My doctor was baffled. He sent me to an Infectious Disease doctor. She ended up saying she had no idea what they were.... she stated that the majority of mouth sores go undiagnosed... there are just too many causes and variables. Also, it seems I could never catch a "blister" to have it biopsied - it always broke before I could get to a doc or lab.

However, I finally convinced my doc to give me some Valtrex, because something told me they were herpetic, even though I've never had a cold sore in my life. The Valtrex always got them under control, and now I am taking one a day to KEEP them away. I was amazed to hear that someone else here had them INSIDE their mouth (was it you, Wendy?) because search as I might (and I have many times) I can't find much mention of others getting cold sores/shingles INSIDE the mouth. Actually, that's what my doctor is calling them now that they respond to Valtrex: Shingles.

We have all the luck, don't we?

Diagnosed November 2004, Used Asacol and Lialda, sometimes worked, sometimes made it worse. Entocort always works but hate it. Remission only lasts 3-6 months and then back on Entocort. Enterolab test July 2017, now gluten free. Time will tell!
