Any tried an Elemental Diet - VIVONEX Plus

Post by mle_ii »

Given that antibiotics didn't treat my Bacterial Overgrowth long term and I probably shouldn't take any more antibiotics cause it'll start to cause worse problems. I'm guessing that I already know my next treatment that the GI Dr is going to tell me. That is an Elemental diet, most likely Vivonex Plus.

Not really looking forward to this as it doesn't sound very healthy (massive amounts of maltodextrin) and from what I've read tastes vile. That and it's very expensive for the 3 weeks I think it'll come to $450. I think that the treatment is 3 weeks of just this and water. Supposedly this treated worked for 80% of folks in one study who had bacterial overgrowth.

Anyone had this product? Or any other elemental diet for that matter?

I'm really considering making up something on my own. Probably something with Milk Protein Isolate, Dextrose, Maltose (in a smaller amount) and some form of fat. Plus some form of multivitamin and perhaps any Amino Acids that the MPI is missing. Though I could substitute some Amino Acids for the MPI, but it'll be more difficult to come up with good formula and could get more expensive. That and who knows if something that I come up will work as well. I know it would taste better and probably be a lot cheaper for sure.

Thanks,
Mike

Yep. I tried it at the recommendation of my nutritionist last June. It tastes like bad chicken broth. I had to hold my nose and force myself to try to drink it. I was only able to make one day. It was horrible.

Considering Pat's reaction--think twice before investing $450. Would hate to see $428.57 go down the drain!

Ugg! I am so not looking forward to it. But it just might be the fix or part of it. :(

It appears that my insurance won't cover it and at $500 I'm not so sure I want to spend the money. I think I could come up with something better and better tasting for < $100. Just need to find a nutritionist who might run through my numbers to make sure I'm not missing anything significant. Don't want to get even sicker. LOL

Thanks,
Mike
