Tex - I'm looking for the Discussion on DES daughters.
Can you direct me to where I can find it?
Thanks,

Well, um, er, uh. Here's the problem: ( I was hoping no one would notice this little issue until I had an opportunity to resolve it, but you caught me right off the bat). Yesterday, I was doing a little tidying up, and I moved that topic back to the "Polls" forum, (where it started). Unfortunately, since I had left a "shadow" of the post in that forum when I originally moved the topic, replacing it meant that there were then two copies of the same topic in the forum. That wouldn't do, so I set out to remove one. It wouldn't let me move the one labeled "Moved", into a recycle bin, so I deleted it, and when I did, the system promptly removed both copies from the database. <sigh>
I make a backup copy of the database about once a week, normally, so I still have that particular data in a backup file, (though finding it is a little like finding a needle in a haystack). The problem is, a database backup is meant to be restored in it's entirety, and if I did that, then we would lose all of the past weeks posts, which wouldn't do at all. Due to the way that data are stored in an SQL database, a topic such as that is stored in many, many locations in the database, and linked by ID numbers, and restoration will be a tedious project. Soooooooo, I will be forced to restore it in little bits and pieces, (many, many, little bits and pieces of data, which will all have to be put in the right places, and linked correctly, or the board will lockup anytime that sometime tries to access any data that are not correctly linked), and also, to be on the safe side, the board will need to be closed while that is being done. (The reason is that if someone were to post before I finished restoring all the data, some of the data would be out of sync, and it could stop the board from operating altogether, due to parse errors.
Consequently, I thought that I would try to tackle that project sometime when I have sufficient time to do it right, and test it out carefully, hopefully when the board is being lightly used, (such as late at night, or at certain times on the weekend. Tampering with the database is a lot like brain surgery - one mistake could "paralyze" the board, and so I'm not anxious to get started without carefully planning it out. I'll need to be in the right frame of mind before I tackle it. I had in mind trying to do it next weekend.
I apologize for the blunder. I'm not sure if that is a "bug" in the system, or if I was just supposed to know better, but I'll certainly know better next time.

No problem Tex. You don't need to find it. I remember the jest of it and was fascinated. I wanted to share it with my GI in a couple of weeks and OB in a couple of months. I can sum it up for them. It's not worth jeopardizing the sight. I should have printed it out a long time ago. My fault, not yours.
I don't post replies often, but I get so much information. Thank you for all you do! You deserve a brownie!!

Well, I appreciate the kind words, but I don't deserve a brownie after losing that entire discussion. And no, it certainly wasn't your fault, since you had no idea that I was going to pull a dumb stunt like that. LOL.
I've checked with the guys who write and troubleshoot the software that we're using for this board, and they agreed that what I plan to do should work. To be on the safe side, I may make a new backup of the database this weekend, (as usual), and then try to restore the missing data before I re-open the board. That way, if it doesn't work right, and I have to restore the entire database, we would only lose any posts that were entered during the short while after it was reopened for testing.
I've made a lot of modifications to the database before, since a lot of the "bells and whistles" on this board require adding tables and/or data directly to the database, so I'm not afraid to "tackle" it, I just want to do it when I've got the time to do it right, and I'm thinking clearly. I've already located the main topics that were deleted, and from the ID numbers in them, I should be able to track down the individual posts, and the corresponding text from them, and other related information.
It should be a good learning experience - IOW, it should teach me not to do it again. LOL.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi Shirley,
Well yes, I considered that, and I'd certainly prefer to do that, (since it's the easiest and safest option), but the author of that topic, (cayocosta), might not appreciate it, especially since it was her only post.
I suppose I can leave it at this: If anyone wants to see that topic resurrected, I'll try to restore it. If not, I'll just leave it as it is.
In view of what happened, I think it would be a good idea if in the future, anytime we move a topic, we not leave a shadow in the original forum. That will eliminate any risk of that ever happening again, because it will prevent the possibility of creating duplicate topics as a result of moving.
What do you mean, you're sure it won't matter? Everyone's opinion matters - especially yours and Becky's, because both of you spoke up against restoring it, so that leaves me outvoted. LOL.
Okay, how about this? Rather than restore that topic, (which obviously incurs a risk of making the board unstable, if something should go wrong), I'll see if I can locate the text from the individual posts, and just re-post as much information as I can find. I think I can remember parts of the statistics from the poll, (there were only 13 votes altogether, and 6 of them did not know, etc.,). I may be able to locate the rest of that poll information in the backup, or maybe someone else can recall other numbers. I'll see what I can find next weekend.
Thanks for offering your opinion, because it definitely counts.
Love,
Tex

As an IT person, I can identify with your frustration. I wouldn't bother. You'd be sacrificing the integrity of many other postings and it's not worth it. Just consider it a lesson learned and go from there. You're not going to disappoint very many people if only 13 people responded.
You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Gloria,
According to the post count in the backup copy of the data, there were 15 posts - strange, considering that there were only 13 responses to the poll. As polls go, it definitely didn't lead to any earth-shaking conclusions. I have to agree that it's not worth the time and effort it would take to restore it. Still, there are probably a lot of people in the world who might find it interesting. A lot of lurkers read this board.
Shirley, you may be right - anything could happen yet. I had a few minutes to spare today, and I located the addresses for the first and last posts for that topic, so the rest of them have to be somewhere within those limits. I'll see how much time I have this weekend. LOL.
